"Wizja Włoch w polskiej i francuskiej literaturze romantyzmu (1800-1850)" to książka poświęcona powszechnej w dziewiętnastowiecznej Europie "modzie na Włochy". Na przykładach zaczerpniętych z arcydzieł literackich (autorstwa Polaków, m. in. Juliusza Słowackiego, Cypriana Norwida, Zygmunta Krasińskiego, oraz Francuzuów, m. in. Alfreda de Musset, René Chateaubrianda, George Sand i pani de Staël) i dzieł minorum gentium, przedstawia podobieństwa i różnice w postrzeganiu Italii, jakie odczytać można z sytuujących się na pograniczu literatury i dokumentu relacji i zapisków z wojaży po Półwyspie Apenińskim i Sycylii ("podróż włoska" okazuje się w tym kontekście autonomicznym gatunkiem literackim), a także z utworów o charakterze fikcji literackiej - prozy artystycznej, dramatu i poezji. Głównym przedmiotem pracy jest romantyczna italomania - fascynacja Włochami, traktowanymi jako przestrzeń o określonych walorach estetycznych, obowiązujących regułach życia i panujących zwyczajach. Analiza specyfiki wizji polskiej i francuskiej oraz tego, co w nich wspólne i niezmienne, przynosi próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy kształtujące się w literaturze mity i stereotypy związane z Italią są zjawiskiem uniwersalnym, czy też świadczą o mentalności i sposobie widzenia i ukazywania świata przez jeden z narodów dziewiętnastowiecznej Europy. Znamienne przejawy italianizmu (czyli sposobu postrzegania Włoch jako przestrzeni realnej i wyobrażonej, charakteryzowania ich mieszkańców i obyczajów, stosunku do przeszłości literackiej i historycznej, a także kwestii tworzenia się i funkcjonowania stereotypów) są w książce traktowane jako odrębne zjawisko, nie zaś jako element towarzyszący romantycznego imaginarium literatur polskiej i francuskiej. Wizja Włoch pokazuje także, jak czynne do dziś wyobrażenia i stereotypy dotyczące Italii i jej mieszkańców są głęboko zakorzenione w tradycjach romantyzmu, zaś nasz sposób postrzegania Włoch jest silnie inspirowany literaturą XIX wieku.

"The Vision of Italy in the Polish and French Literature of Romanticism (1800-1850)" is a book devoted to the vogue for Italy which was common in 19th-century Europe. On the examples derived from literary masterpieces (written by Poles - among others by Juliusz Słowacki, Cyprian Norwid, Zygmunt Krasiński - and by French, for example Alfred de Musset, René Chateaubriand George Sand and Madame de Staël) and works minorum gentium, the book presents similarities and differences in the perception of Italy, which can be read from relations and notes, situated on the borderline between literature and reporting, concerning voyages on the Apennine Peninsula and Sicily ("Italian journey" turns out to be an independent literary genre in this context), as well as from works belonging to the literary fiction - artistic prose, drama and poetry. The main subject of the book concerns romantic italomania (Italianate fashion) - fascination with Italy treated as a sphere characterised by certain aesthetic values, rules of life and customs. The analysis of the Polish and French visions as well as their common traits and permanent components brings an attempt of answer to the question whether myths and stereotypes being shaped in literature and connected with Italy constitute a universal phenomenon or they show mentality of the particular nation of 19th-century Europe and its way of viewing and presenting the world. The significant manifestations of italianism (i.e. the way of perceiving Italy as a sphere which is real or imagined, characterising its inhabitants and customs, attitude towards literary and historical past as well as the question of creating and functioning stereotypes) are treated in the book as a separate phenomenon, not as an element accompanying the romantic imaginary of the Polish and French literatures. Wizja Włoch [The Vision of Italy] also shows how still active imaginations and stereotypes concerning Italy and its inhabitants are deeply rooted in the traditions of Romanticism, and how our way of perceiving Italy is strongly inspired by the literature of the 19th century.
