The following paper examines the concept of history in ancient Greece and Rome. The author analyses the concept of history as understood by ancient Greeks and Romans and attempts to answer certain questions. What is history? How was this concept perceived by people living a few thousand years ago? Roman and Greek states in different stages of social and political development are discussed and compared. The main point of these reflections is that there is no one definition of history, which is flexible and variable.
