How to tame death? The dual nature of the puppet as a metaphor for life and death

Głównym celem pracy jest wskazanie na proces animacji lalek, ucieleśniający metaforę życia i śmierci. Badania podzielone na dwa główne bloki tematyczne (wątki teoretyczne i analiza spektakli), ukażą różne konteksty, zwracające uwagę na dwoistą naturę animantów. Szczególnie istotne okażą się: rola terapeutyczna, wątki antropologiczne, a także filozoficzne, które wskażą na materię bytów nieożywionych zdolną oddać paradoksy życia. W trakcie przeglądu historyczno-kulturowego wymienione zostaną postaci takie jak Sigmund Freud, Graham Harman, Tadeusz Kantor, Marcin Jarnuszkiewicz, mające duży wpływ na postrzeganie statusu lalek. Druga część (poświęcona lalkom we współczesnych sztukach), przedstawi różnorodne podejście artystów do wykorzystywania dwoistej natury animantów. Dodatkowo w pracy porównano sposoby kreowania iluzji ożywienia, bezpośrednio wpływającej na relację między sceną a widownią. Kluczowa okaże się materia lalki, stająca się pojemnym naczyniem na emocje związane z żałobą, traumą, kryzysem egzystencjalnym oraz będąca źródłem rozszerzającej się perspektywy na kruchość ludzkiego życia.

The main aim of this work is to explore the process of puppet animation, which embodies the metaphor of life and death. The research, divided into two main thematic blocks (theoretical themes and performance analysis), will explore various contexts that highlight the dual nature of animators. Of particular importance will be their therapeutic role, anthropological themes, and philosophical themes, which will highlight the materiality of inanimate beings capable of conveying the paradoxes of life. A historical and cultural overview will highlight figures such as Sigmund Freud, Graham Harman, Tadeusz Kantor, and Marcin Jarnuszkiewicz, who have had a significant impact on the perception of puppets. The second part (dedicated to puppets in contemporary art) will present diverse approaches by artists to utilizing the dual nature of animators. Additionally, the work compares methods of creating the illusion of animation, which directly impacts the relationship between stage and audience. The material of the doll will prove crucial, becoming a capacious vessel for emotions related to mourning, trauma, and existential crisis, and being a source of expanding perspective on the fragility of human life.
