Cultural phenomenon of Che Guevara

This thesis deals with the cultural phenomenon of Argentinean Ernesto "Che" Guevara, a communist known for fighting alongside Fidel Castro during the Cuban revolution. The author is trying to find the reasons for which “Che” Guevara, somewhat forgotten after his death, was elevated to the rank of idol of youth during the 1968 student revolt and during the beginnings of anti-globalization movements. The author looks at “Che’s” life and elaborates on his views from the broader ideological and historical perspective. This is necessary to explain the pro-communist tendencies of the Latin America elites. It is necessary to explore history of the idea in order to show Ernesto Guevara’s input and his broadening of the communist doctrine. The author takes under consideration the importance of international background of the debate, especially highlighting the cold war era interrelationships which influenced choices made by the Argentinean communist. In analysing the issue of the Ernesto Guevara’s cultural phenomenon, it is necessary not only to demonstrate the life of this character, but an attempt to answer the question as to why “Che” was chosen by young Europeans and Americans as a symbol of his rebellion. The author presents his thesis that “Che” had special predispositions (charisma, appearance) and that there were co-incidents (especially his death as a martyr in the view of his fans) which made him an appropriate candidate for the idol of the fight against the capitalistic and conservative system, in the Western world, in the late sixties of the 20th century.Finally, the author wonders what it is today - more than forty years after his death - that makes “Che” a popular symbol of the fight against the main life stream of capitalist societies. Particular interest raises the question about the character of this cult. Does it come from the deep fascination with the ideology and Guevara’s life or rather from the lack of information and basic facts about him? The author presents a controversial character of this Argentine revolutionist while considering the reasons of his presence in contemporary popular culture.

Praca ta zajmuje się fenomenem kulturowym argentyńskiego komunisty Ernesto „Che” Guevary, znanego przede wszystkim z walki u boku Fidela Castro w czasie Rewolucji Kubańskiej. Autor stara się dotrzeć do przyczyn, dla których postać ta, nieco zapomniana po śmierci, została wyniesiona do rangi idola młodzieży w czasie studenckiej rewolty roku 1968, a następnie powróciła wraz z początkiem ruchów alterglobalistycznych. Autor spogląda na fenomen „Che” odtwarzając życie postaci, przybliżając czytelnikowi poglądy Argentyńczyka, a także osadzające je w szerszej perspektywie ideologicznej. Konieczne jest wykorzystanie perspektywy historycznej, która tłumaczy predyspozycje elit Ameryki Łacińskiej do optowania za opcją komunistyczną. Rozważania na temat doktryny komunistycznej, wkładu Ernesto Guevary w jej poszerzenie sprawia iż konieczne jest skorzystanie z wiedzy z zakresu historii idei. Biorąc pod uwagę, iż niezwykle ważne jest tło międzynarodowe rozważań, autor zwraca szczególną uwagę na zależności ery zimnowojennej, które miały duże znaczenie życiowe wybory dokonywane przez argentyńskiego komunistę. Analizując kwestię fenomenu kulturowego Ernesto Guevary konieczne jest nie tylko zaprezentowanie życia tej postaci, ale próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, dlaczego akurat „Che” został wybrany przez młodzież europejską oraz amerykańską, jako symbol jej buntu. Autor stawia tezę, że miał on specjalne predyspozycje wizerunkowe (charyzma, przyciągająca aparycja), a do tego nastąpił splot okoliczności (w tym przede wszystkim „męczeńska”, w rozumieniu fanów, śmierć), które sprawiły że był on właściwym kandydatem na idola walki przeciwko systemowi kapitalistycznemu i konserwatywnemu w świecie Zachodu pod koniec lat sześćdziesiątych XX wieku. Wreszcie autor zastanawia się, co sprawia, że postać „Che” również dziś, ponad czterdzieści lat po jego śmierci, jest popularnym symbolem walki z głównym nurtem życia w krajach kapitalistycznych. Szczególne zainteresowanie wzbudza to, czy kult ów ma charakter głębokiej fascynacji ideologią, życiorysem Guevary, czy też wynika z braku podstawowych informacji na temat tej osoby. Autor prezentuje kontrowersyjną postać argentyńskiego rewolucjonisty rozpatrując przyczyny jego obecności we współczesnej kulturze masowej.
