WIZERUNEK VIRGINII WOOLF W JEJ „DZIENNIKACH” (1920-1924), W POWIEŚCI MICHAELA CUNNINGHAMA „GODZINY” I W SZTUCE EDNY O’ BRIEN „VIRGINIA”

Praca magisterska analizuje trzy wizerunki Virginii Woolf na podstawie trzech tekstów: „Dzienników” Virginii Woolf, powieści „Godziny” Michaela Cunninghama i sztuki pt. „Virginia” Edny O’Brien. Praca podzielona jest na trzy rozdziały, z których każdy przedstawia pisarkę w wyżej wymienionych utworach według tych samych kryteriów. Każdy rozdział dzieli się na cztery części, które skupiają się na autoobrazie Virginii Woolf, procesie twórczym, kondycji psychicznej i relacjach osobistych pisarki. W częściach poświęconych autoobrazowi pisarki skupiam się nie tylko na tym, jak autorka postrzega samą siebie, ale również wyróżniam jej cechy charakteru, które dają o sobie znać w omawianym tekście. W częściach poświęconych procesowi twórczemu koncentruję się na tym, jak Woolf planuje pisanie, jak przebiega ten proces oraz jakie uczucia jej w tym czasie towarzyszą. Części traktujące o kondycji psychicznej autorki opisują symptomy choroby psychicznej objawiające się u niej, stany emocjonalne oraz wydarzenia sygnalizujące nawrót choroby. Podrozdziały mówiące o relacjach Woolf opisują jej interakcje z najbliższymi, tj. z mężem Leonardem i siostrą Vanessą, jej stosunek do nieżyjących rodziców oraz do osób spoza rodziny. Podrozdziały te ukazują również, jak pisarka była traktowana przez osoby z jej najbliższego otoczenia.

My Master’s thesis concentrates on three portrayals of Virginia Woolf on the basis of the examination of three texts: Virginia Woolf’s Diaries (vol.2), Michael Cunningham’s novel The Hours and Edna O’Brien’s play Virginia. The thesis consists of three chapters and each of them focuses on the image of Virginia Woolf in the particular work, which is analysed according to the same criteria. Each chapter is divided into four subchapters, namely “Virginia Woolf’s Self-Image, “The Creative Process”, “The Writer’s Mental Condition” and “Woolf’s Relationships.” In the parts devoted to the writer’s self-image, I focus not only on how the novelist perceives herself, but also on her character traits which are noticeable to others. In the parts devoted to the creative process I concentrate mainly on how Woolf plans her writing, how it proceeds and what she feels and thinks during this process. The parts about her mental condition depict symptoms of the mental illness from which Woolf suffered, her emotions and incidents connected with her condition. The subchapters about her relationships describe the author’s relations with her closest relatives, i.e. her husband Leonard and sister Vanessa, the writer’s attitude to her dead parents and to her acquaintances. These parts also present how Woolf was treated by people from her circle.
