"Persepolis" by Marjane Satrapi as an autobiography in pictures

The purpose of the study is to interpret the comic Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi as an autobiography captured in pictures. Referring to the concept of Philippe Lejeune’s “autobiographical pact” the author of the thesis is trying to find autobiographical features in Satrapi’s work and watch the way of their accomplishment. The thesis on the picture autobiography concentrates mostly on the person of Marjane – the main character and narrator of the comic. Subsequently analysed are the history of modern Iran, the Iranian Revolution and the trauma of war. The study also raises the situation of a woman in the Islamic culture. Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi definitely holds a special place among comics. Its great artistic value – both graphic and literary – as well as brilliantly used icono-linguistic narration not only convince to pay more attention to comic and to increase the knowledge of this genre but also prove that an autobiography presented in form of pictures can be appealing to the reader, and what is more it can involve the reader in its course of events, appoint him a witness of the story.

Celem pracy jest odczytanie komiksu "Persepolis" Marjane Satrapi jako autobiografii w obrazkach. Odnosząc się do koncepcji „paktu autobiograficznego” Philippe’a Lejeune’a, autorka pracy doszukuje się cech autobiografii w dziele Satrapi i stara się przyjrzeć sposobowi ich realizacji. Najwięcej miejsca w analizie obrazkowej autobiografii poświęca się postaci Marjane – głównej bohaterki i narratorki komiksu. Następnie zwraca się uwagę na zagadnienie najnowszej historii Iranu, rewolucji islamskiej oraz traumy wojny, a także porusza się kwestię kobiety w kulturze islamskiej. Z pewnością "Persepolis" Marjane Satrapi zajmuje szczególne miejsce wśród komiksów. Jego wysoka wartość artystyczna – zarówno pod względem graficznym, jak i literackim – oraz błyskotliwie wykorzystana narracja ikono-lingwistyczna nie tylko przekonują do zwrócenia uwagi i zgłębienia wiedzy na temat gatunku komiksu. Pokazują one również, że forma autobiograficzna zrealizowana za pomocą obrazków może przemówić do czytelnika, a nawet zaangażować go w przebieg wydarzeń, ustanowić świadkiem.
