The creations of Romantic children in selected fairy tales by E. T. A. Hoffmann and N. Hawthorne

Praca jest próbą ukazania konieczności wprowadzenia nowej kategorii w dotychczasowych charakterystykach dziecka romantycznego poprzez omówienie tekstów, które znajdują się na marginesach badań literaturoznawczych. Praca zawiera analizę i interpretację dwóch baśni: E. T. A. Hoffmanna Tajemnicze dziecko oraz N. Hawthorne'a The Snow Image. A Childish Miracle. Rozdział pierwszy ukazuje stosunek romantyków do bohatera dziecięcego i gatunku baśni, drugi nakreśla świat przedstawiony w utworach, zawiera charakterystykę postaci oraz omawia narrację. Kolejne dwa rozdziały prezentują różne modele bohaterów dziecięcych (ich cechy oraz relacje, w jakich się znajdują), ukazując podobieństwa i różnice zachodzące między dziećmi uważanymi powszechnie za romantyczne, a ich rówieśnikami z baśni. Rozdział piąty omawia postać dziecka jako medium kłótni oświeconych z romantykami.

This work is an attempt to show the necessity of introducing a new cathegory in the present-day characterisation of a Romantic child through discussing the texts found on the margins of literary studies. This work contains the analysis and interpretation of two fairy tales: Strange child by E. T. A. Hoffmann and The Snow Image. A Childish Miracle by N. Hawthorne. The first chapter shows the attitude of romanticists towards a child character and the genre of fairy tales, the second one outlines the world shown in the works, includes the characterisation and discusses the narration. The two following chapters present the different models of child characters (their characteristics and the relations in which they are found), showing the differences and similarities existing between the children generally considered as Romantic and their counterparts from fairy tales. Chapter five discusses the child character as a medium of the dispute of the Enlightened with the Romantics.
