Memes about Polish literature of the nineteenth century – intertextuality, canon and popularisation in social media

Celem pracy jest przedstawienie, jak polska literatura XIX wieku funkcjonuje w memach i jak rozprzestrzenia się w mediach społecznościowych. Za materiał badawczy posłużyły memy literackie zaczerpnięte z grup na Facebook’u i profili na Instagramie. Autorka analizuje genezę słowa „mem” i jak jego znaczenie zmieniło się na przestrzeni lat. Zwraca również uwagę na intertekstualność memów względem polskiej literatury XIX wieku i wymienia najczęściej pojawiające się utwory, do których nawiązują. Okres ten jest szczególnie ważny ze względu na omawiane w szkołach lektury należące do ogólnie przyjętego kanonu. Autorka zaznacza, że powstające memy literackie mogą być odpowiedzią na narzucaną przez nauczycieli interpretację, a przy ich tworzeniu zachodzi karnawalizacja. Na końcu uwaga zostaje zwrócona na to, jak memy funkcjonują w internecie, jak powstają i przedstawione są jako nośnik pamięci kulturowej. Praca pokazuje, że memy mimo pełnienia celów głównie humorystycznych, mają wpływ na osoby w wieku szkolnym, dając im możliwość reakcji na narzucane im schematy, a także zwraca uwagę na zjawisko dzielenia się takimi treściami w social mediach.

The aim of this study is to present how Polish literature of the 19th century functions in memes and how it spreads on social media. Memes about literature taken from Facebook groups and Instagram profiles were used as a research material. The author analyses the origins of the word 'meme' and how its meaning has changed over the years. She also draws attention to the intertextuality of memes in relation to Polish literature of the 19th century and lists the most common books to which they refer. This period is particularly important because of the readings discussed in schools that belong to the generally accepted canon. The author points out that the memes about literature, that are being created, may be a response to the interpretation imposed by teachers, and that carnivalesque occurs in their creation. Finally, attention is drawn to how memes function on the internet, how they are created and presented as a vehicle of cultural memory. The paper shows that memes, despite serving mainly humorous purposes, have an impact on school-aged people, giving them the opportunity to respond to the patterns imposed on them, and also draws attention to the phenomenon of sharing such content on social media.
