The article describes conceptions of the roles which the psychotherapist adopts during the process of therapy: that of the philosopher/ethicist. The first part of the article presents Karl Jaspers’ thoughts on the psychotherapist assuming a philosopher’s role in a therapeutic relationship. The therapist-philosopher has a certain worldview which influences the process of therapy, as well as the client’s opinions. In Tjeltveit’s conception, described later in the article, the psychotherapist is considered an ethicist. Understood thus, the role of therapist emerges particularly in the following situations: reflection on the ethical questions of psychotherapy, the situation in which an ethical worldview that influences relationships with others is adopted, and when the therapist impacts the opinions and views of other people, especially clients. Introduced concepts are used by the authors to present a view on the cognitive-behavioural psychotherapist as philosopher/ethicist.
