Edith Stein
Edith Stein rarely used the concept of human dignity (Ger. Menschenwürde, menschliche Würde or Latin dignitas), yet she explicitly discussed the topic of human value (Ger. der Wert) and operated with a number of anthropological analyses that assume a very positive evaluation of his or her axiological status. The foremost among these is the one that calls a human being an icon of God (Lat. imago Dei), i.e. a creature made in "the image and likeness" of God; the second is the perspective that understands a man as a person, the third is her metaphysical theory of the transcendental properties of being. The rare passages that employ the concept of dignity also shed light on how the Patroness of Europe understood the notion and offer some sources for considering the "Steinian model of dignity". In the presentation I will thematise these passages and the relevant analyses of human value in order to reconstruct the crucial characteristics of the Steinian approach to human dignity. I will ask between what dimensions or types of dignity can we differentiate, how is the dignity-bearer obliged by his/her dignity and what is the connection between dignity and human moral status. I will conclude the presentation by showing that the Steinian approach to dignity can be fruitfully used in ongoing legal and doctrinal debates concerning the notion of dignity.
