Solitude as a method of returning to the world in the philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Przedmiotem pracy jest zagadnienie samotności w pismach filozoficznych oraz autobiograficznych Jana Jakuba Rousseau. Rozwijaną w pracy tezą jest, że wykorzystanie samotności jako „metody powrotu do świata” jest charakterystycznym dla Rousseau antynomicznym zabiegiem podpadającym pod uprawianą przezeń „moralność eksperymentalną”. Tytułowy „świat” to „świat pozorów”, rezultat „utraty pierwotnej przejrzystości”, czyli spontanicznego, bezpośredniego kontaktu z naturą – tak ludzką, jak rzeczywistości przyrodniczej. Ów „świat pozorów” wykształcił się na drodze rozwoju społecznego ludzkości będącego reakcją na zmiany zachodzące w środowisku przyrodniczym; to ogólne określenie instytucji politycznych, kultury oraz innych form współżycia ludzkiego. Samotność u Rousseau pełni funkcję moralną, pozwala dystansować się względem rzeczonego świata, co, wg Rousseau, daje wgląd w rzeczywistą jego naturę i pozwala nawiązać kontakt ze stanem naturalnym. Droga do odwiecznych prawd o świecie prowadzi przez serce oraz uznanie siebie jako cząstki porządku boskiego (rozumianego jako wieczny, racjonalny ład). Chrystus jest dla Rousseau wzorem osobowym – kwintesencją odważnej samotności obranej w imię nowego porządku moralnego.Założeniem niniejszej pracy jest, że pisma autobiograficzne stanowią wartościowy wkład interpretacyjny dla zrozumienia całości koncepcji filozoficznej Jana Jakuba Rousseau.

The subject of the paper is the issue of solitude in the works and autobiographical writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Thesis stated herein is that solitude is being used as „a method of coming back to the world”, which is a typically Rousseauian, antinomic effort falling under „experimental morality” pursued by him. Title „world” is a „sham world”, being a result of the „loss of the primeval transparency”, a spontaneous, direct relationship with the nature – both human and wildlife one. The „sham world” has occurred as a result of an environmental change, to which the humankind had had to adjust by i.a. social development; it's a general name to describe political and cultural institutions and other forms of human coexistence. Solitude is of a moral function, it allows distance towards the world, which according to Rousseau brings an insight to its real nature and lets us connect with the state of nature. A road to the eternal truth goes through one's heart and recognizing oneself as a part of the divine order (which is eternal and rational). To Rousseau, Christ being infinitely solitary in the name of the new moral order makes a perfect role model.The work is founded on the notion that the autobiographical writings remain a valuable interpretative input helpful in understanding the Rousseau's philosophical concepts as a whole.
