The Essence and Function of Gnosis in Selected Gnostic Movements

Przedmiotem pracy jest pojęcie gnozy funkcjonujące w wybranych nurtach określanych wspólnie mianem gnozy syryjsko-egipskiej. Pojęcie gnozy rozpatrywane jest jako kategoria epistemologiczna i soteriologiczna. Praca składa się z trzech części. W pierwszej części autor przedstawia typ idealny mitu gnozy syryjsko-egipskiej oraz ważniejsze opozycje binarne, poprzez które ukazywany jest gnostycki światopogląd. W drugiej części autor rozpatruje gnozę jako formę poznania, analizując pojęcie iluzji odnoszące się do świata codziennego doświadczenia, pojęcie anamnezy w odniesieniu do gnozy, przedmiot gnostycznego poznania jakim jest równocześnie jaźń gnostyka oraz Najwyższa Istota, a także niekonceptualność gnozy, która w związku z tym jawi się jako poznanie dostępne wyłącznie w bezpośrednim doświadczeniu. Pod koniec drugiej części autor prezentuje dwa główne modele urzeczywistniania gnozy. Trzecia część poświęcona jest soteriologicznemu aspektowi gnozy i ukazuje koncepcję cierpienia w świetle gnozy, oraz ideał soteriologiczny jakim jest anapausis.

The subject of the paper is the concept of gnosis functioning in selected traditions collectively referred to as “Syrian-Egyptian gnosticism”. The concept of gnosis is discussed as an epistemological and soteriological category. The paper consists of three parts. In the first part, the author presents the ideal type of Syrian-Egyptian gnostic myth together with the main binary oppositions, through which the gnostic worldview is presented. In the second part, the author discusses gnosis as a form of cognition, by analysing the concept of illusion referring to the world of daily experience, the concept of anamnesis in relation to gnosis, the subject of gnostic cognition, being both the gnostic’s true self and the Supreme Being, as well as the non-conceptuality of gnosis, seen as a form of cognition available exclusively as a direct experience. At the end of the second part the author presents two main models of the realization of gnosis. The third part is devoted to the soteriological aspect of gnosis and it presents the concept of suffering in the light of gnosis, as well as the soteriological ideal of anapausis.
