Wzorce przyjaźni w „Tortilla Flat” oraz „Myszy i ludzie” Johna Steinbecka

Praca dyplomowa skupia się na analizie męskiej przyjaźni w powieściach Johna Steinbecka „Tortilla Flat” oraz „Myszy i ludzie”, z uwzględnieniem arystotelejskiej filozofii przyjaźni, zdefiniowanej ponownie przez profesor Lorraine Smith Pangle (UT Austin). Po przedstawieniu osobistych doświadczeń pisarza i wpływu przyjaźni na jego twórczość, następuje zarys terminologii stosowanej w klasyfikacji przyjaźni przedstawionych w obu utworach Steinbecka. Przedmiotem analizy w drugim rozdziale jest „Tortilla Flat”, której główni bohaterowie kierują się własnym systemem wartości, odmiennym od obowiązujących norm. Relacje pomiędzy paisanos opierają się na zaspokajaniu podstawowych potrzeb jednostek, nawet kosztem innych członków społeczności. Jedyną relacją, która odbiega od tej tendencji jest więź między Piratem i jego psami. Trzeci rozdział skupia się na powieści „Myszy i ludzie”, której główni bohaterowie, George i Lennie, stanowią przykład niemalże braterskiej więzi. Pozostali pracownicy sezonowi spotkani na farmie wiodą samotne życie, nie angażując się w żadne przyjaźnie, stanowią tło dla trudnej relacji głównych bohaterów. Wspólne marzenie George’a i Lenny’ego o posiadaniu własnej farmy jest czynnikiem motywującym ich działania i odróżniającym ich od pozostałych bohaterów powieści, nie mających żadnych marzeń i planów. Ostatni rozdział stanowi krótką analizę relacji między ludźmi i zwierzętami, oraz ich symbolicznym znaczeniem w obu powieściach. The dissertation focuses on the analysis of male friendship as portrayed in John Steinbeck’s Tortilla Flat and Of Mice and Men, with regard to the Aristotelian philosophy of friendship, redefined by professor Lorraine Smith Pangle (UT Austin). After the presentation of Steinbeck’s personal experience and the influence that his friends had on his writing, the theoretical framework applied to classify the relationships of Steinbeck’s novels is described. The second chapter focuses on the analysis of Tortilla Flat, in which paisanos have their own moral code which differs from the universal norms. The relations between the paisanos are based on the fulfillment of their basic needs, even at the expense of others in the community. The only relation that escapes the tendency is the bond between the Pirate and his dogs. The third chapter analyzes Of Mice and Men, whose main protagonists, George and Lennie, are an example of a brotherly bond. The other migrant workers met by them on the ranch lead a solitary life, refraining from engaging in any friendships. They serve as a background to the difficult relation of the main characters. George and Lennie’s mutual dream of owning a farm is the factor that motivates them and distinguishes them from other characters in the novel who do not pursue any dreams or make plans for the future. The final chapter provides a brief analysis of the human-animal relationships and their significance in both novels. Steinbeck’s personal experiences as a dog lover are included, along with his remarks on both human and animal nature.
