Helmuth Plessner. From philosophical anthropology to political anthropology

This paper shows the way, which Helmuth Plessner passed from the assumptions of philosophical anthropology to political anthropology. The core of this paper is to show the structure of man as a political being, equipped with the creative power and burdened with the responsibility for his actions. First of all, paper allows us to understand what is the phenomenon of political anthropology and how it should be interpreted in the light of the considerations of one of the most prominent representatives of the field - Helmuth Plessner. In order to make the best presentation of human as a political construct, the paper begins with the interpretation of man as a natural and problematic being, which is the subject of discussion of philosophical anthropology. It shows how these two aspects of anthropology - philosophical and political - work together. This paper, which constitutes the analysis and interpretation of the Plessner’s thought, can be considered as part of a broader context, where political anthropology itself is a heart of an area. Helmuth Plessner is one of three major thinkers of the twentieth century who have been debating the issue of the political man. Others Max Scheler and Arnold Gehlen also are prominent representatives of the field. Therefore, paper can be a prelude to a discussion of a multi-faceted way of understanding the phenomena of political anthropology and philosophy. This essay mainly focuses on the evolution of the Plessner’s thought and the consequences of his assumptions in light of his philosophical anthropology.Reading this paper should give a clear understanding of the entire path, which Plessner had to travel, to consider man as a political entity, equipped with a creative power and burdened with great responsibility. Philosophical anthropology and philosophy behind it was necessary in order to try to understand the political dimension, in which a man had to operate. However, the goal was precisely the political anthropology, which emphatically rejects the attitude degrading politics, power, and their functions. Helmuth Plessner presented in a comprehensive manner and proved the thesis of the necessity of politics and its fundamental impact on the world of man. Thanks to the support for politics with a several seemingly separate fields as anthropology, biology, philosophy and history, thinker could established for the politics position among the most important aspects of human existence. Politics for Plessner is the only way to identify a man, who will always remain, in some sense, mysterious. This paper aims to reveal the process of the philosopher's thought and give more focus to his most important arguments and assumptions. Comprehensive examination of sources and studies on Helmuth Plessner’s thought is a step closer to find out the truth about man. This paper is a confirmation of the hypothesis of a politicality man as an individual forever involved in the structure of power.
