The attitude towards transsexuals in American films and series in the 21st century

W niniejszej pracy dyplomowej został poruszony problem transseksualności oraz tego jak osoby transseksualne pokazywane są w amerykańskich filmach oraz serialach. Przedstawione w pracy zagadnienia mają za zadanie odpowiedzieć na pytanie jak szerokorozumiana popkultura w dzisiejszych czasach wpływa na świadomość społeczeństwa oraz jak je edukuje. Praca ma być też pewnym wyjaśnieniem, że sposób, w jaki najbliższe osoby reagują na korekty płci swoich najbliższych, może wpłynąć znacząco na to, jakie jest później nastawienie społeczne wobec tych osób. W pierwszym rozdziale pracy zostały przybliżone pojęcia, które związane są z tematem. W kolejnym rozdziale przedstawię zarys historyczny tego jak tworzyły się społeczności LGBT oraz jak takie osoby na przestrzeni lat były ukazywane w amerykańskim kinie. W ostaniem, a zarazem badawczym rozdziale swojej pracy zostanie ukazana analiza trzech filmów oraz jednego serialu, który jednak potraktowany zostanie jako swego rodzaju fenomen.

In this BA thesis the issue of transsexuality and how transsexual people are shown in American films and series is tackled and diagnosed. The issues presented in this dissertation are designed to answer the question of how nowadays pop culture in its broader sense affects the awareness of the society and how it educates it. The thesis is also supposed to be kind of an explanation that the way in which family and friends react to their relatives’ gender correction can significantly affect the social attitudes towards this group of people. In the first chapter of my paper I delve into concepts related to the topic. In the next chapter I present a historical outline of how the LGBT communities were formed and how these people have been shown in the American cinema over the years. In the last and at the same time research chapter of this thesis I present the analysis of three films and one series, which, however, is presented separately, as a kind of phenomenon.
