Queer Identity and the Experience of Race in American Cinema – An Analysis of the Film “Moonlight”

Praca analizuje rozwój tożsamości queerowej i doświadczenia rasy w amerykańskim kinie na przykładzie filmu „Moonlight” Barry’ego Jenkinsa. Celem jest dogłębne zrozumienie procesów kształtowania się tożsamości głównego bohatera, Chirona. jako Czarnego queer chłopaka dorastającego w południowych Stanach Zjednoczonych. Korzystając z teorii queer oraz teoretycznych pojęć takich jak tożsamość queerowa, intersekcjonalność, toksyczna męskość, zinternalizowany rasizm i homofobia, niniejsza praca bada wpływ środowiska, rodziny oraz innych bliskich bohaterowi osób na jego rozwój osobisty i tożsamość. Praca skupia się również na przedstawieniu doświadczeń i trudności Czarnych queer mężczyzn z perspektywy intersekcjonalnej, uwzględniając rasę, płeć, orientację seksualną oraz klasę jako nierozerwalne elementy tożsamości bohatera. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono również różnym formom opresji społecznych oraz ich internalizacji. Dodatkowo praca analizuje istotę symboli takich jak woda, światło księżyca, bryza morska czy muzyka w procesie kształtowania tożsamości Chirona.

The thesis analyzes the development of queer identity and the experience of race in American cinema using Barry Jenkins’ film „Moonlight” as a case study. The primary objective is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the processes involved in the identity formation of the main character, a Black queer boy growing up in the southern United States. Using queer theory and theoretical concepts such as queer identity, intersectionality, toxic masculinity, internalized racism and homophobia, this research examines the influence of the protagonist’s environment, family, and close relationships on his personal growth and identity. Furthermore, the study focuses on presenting the experiences and difficulties of Black queer men from the intersectional perspective, considering race, gender, sexual orientation, and class as integral components of the protagonist’s identity. Particular emphasis is places on various forms of social oppression and their internalization. Additionally, the thesis analyzes the symbolic significance of elements such as water, moonlight, breeze and music in the context of Chiron’s identity formation.
