Translation of Culturally-loaded Elements: The Case of

Celem pracy jest analiza strategii tłumaczenia nacechowanych kulturowo elementów pojawiających się w amerykańskim przekładzie książki Joanny Wiszniewicz pt.: „A jednak czasem miewam sny. Historia pewnej samotności”. Autorką przekładu zatytułowanego "And Yet I Still Have Dreams. A Story of a Certain Loneliness" jest Regina Grol. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Pierwszy, poświęcony teorii przekładu, przedstawia zmieniające się na przestrzeni wieków podejście do tłumaczenia kulturowego. Zawiera definicje wyobcowania oraz adaptacji, a także opis najistotniejszych klasyfikacji procedur i strategii przekładowych, jak również zagadnień związanych ze zjawiskiem nieprzekładalności. Rozdział drugi ma na celu przybliżenie zarówno sylwetki autorki, jak i tłumaczki, a także wprowadzenie do tematyki analizowanej książki. W rozdziale podjęto również próbę ukazania różnic w postrzeganiu kwestii żydowskiej w Polsce i Stanach Zjednoczonych. Rozdział trzeci to analiza porównawcza najciekawszych i bardzo często szczególnie problematycznych przykładów pochodzących z oryginału i przekładu. Każdy przykład opatrzono komentarzem, w którym opisano możliwe konsekwencje płynące z wyboru strategii czy też procedury przekładowej, na jaką decyduje się tłumaczka. Pod koniec rozdziału trzeciego przedstawiono podsumowanie wszystkich wybranych w przekładzie rozwiązań, a także wskazano, jakie strategie i procedury przekładowe dominują w tekście docelowym.

The purpose of the thesis is to conduct an analysis of the translation strategies of culturally-loaded elements in the American-English rendering of Joanna Wiszniewicz’s "A jednak czasem miewam sny. Historia pewnej samotności", as performed by Regina Grol.The thesis comprises of three chapters. The first chapter presents the changing attitudes towards cultural translation which can be observed throughout centuries. It attempts at defining both domestication and foreignisation as well as describing most important classifications of translation procedures and strategies. The chapter also shows the attitudes to translatability and untranslatability phenomena being spurious issues among linguists and translators.The second chapter aims at providing some biographical information on both – the author and the translator. It also introduces the main theme of the analysed book. The chapter also attempts to outline the differences in the perception of the Holocaust and the Jewish question in Poland and in the USA. The third chapter serves as a comparative analysis of the most interesting, and very often most problematic, examples from the source and the target text illustrating the translation of culture-specific elements. Each of the analysed fragments includes a commentary describing the consequences which may result from the translator’s choices of a given translation procedure or strategy.The chapter concludes by enumerating the translation procedures and strategies applied while rendering Wiszniewicz’s book into English.
