The multi-faced nature of time in Olga Tokarczuk’s „Primeval and other times"

Praca omawia różne aspekty pojmowania czasu w powieści Olgi Tokarczuk „Prawiek i inne czasy". Głównym jej celem jest wskazanie na powiązania kategorii czasu w powieści z rozmaitymi koncepcjami z zakresu filozofii i literaturoznawstwa, na przykład św. Augustyna czy Martina Heideggera. Tekst poszerza obecny stan badań nad twórczością Tokarczuk i przedstawia nowe propozycje interpretacji, uwzględniające trzy perspektywy czasowe: porządek zdarzeń (chronos), właściwy moment (kairos) i wiekuiste trwanie (aion). Praca składa się z trzech części. Rozdział pierwszy omawia czas ludzkich bohaterów powieści. Rozdział drugi część dotyczy czasu przedmiotów. Ostatni rozdział przedstawia czas natury i bytów niematerialnych (Bóg, anioły).

The thesis discusses various aspects of the understanding of time in Olga Tokarczuk’s „Primeval and other times". The main aim of this thesis is to put the emphasis on the connections between concept of time presented in the novel and various philosophical and literary contexts, for example considerations of St. Augustine or Martin Heidegger on the nature of time. The thesis extends the current state of research and presents new suggestions for interpretations, taking into account three perspectives in describing time: a sequence of events (chronos), a right moment (kairos) and eternal duration (aion). The text consists of three parts. The first chapter discusses the time of the human heroes. The second chapter describes the time of material objects. And finally, the third chapter presents the time of nature and immaterial beings as God or angels.
