Niniejszy artykuł omawia nowelę Philipa Rotha "Pierś" oraz opowiadania "Wolny pomidor" Micheala Bishopa i "Lepszą przemianę" Briana Aldissa jako adaptacje "Przemiany" Franza Kafki. Wskazuje się, że Franz Kafka nie tylko wywarł istotny wpływ na science fiction, lecz także może być uznany za pełnoprawnego przedstawiciela tego gatunku, jeśli przyjąć jego definicję jako „wyobcowania poznawczego” (Suvin 1972). W takim ujęciu również "Pierś" Philipa Rotha mieści się w ramach science fiction. Artykuł bada strategie stosowane przez autorów w celu wykorzystania komicznego potencjału opowiadania Kafki oraz wariacje tematyczne i formalne paradygmatu ustanowionego przez Kafkę.

The article discusses Philip Roth’s The Breast, Micheal Bishop’s “Rogue Tomato” and Brian Aldiss’s “Better Morphosis” as adaptations of Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. It argues that Franz Kafka not only had a Significant influence on science fiction but is also a legitimate part of science fiction understood as “cognitive estrangement” (Suvin 1972), and that this definition of science fiction is also perfectly applicable to Philip Roth’s novella The Breast. The article examines different strategies that the authors use in order to exploit the comic potential of Kafka’s story, as well as the thematic and formal variations on the paradigm he established.
