Rola stereotypów w wybranych żartach dotyczących społeczeństw brytyjskiego i amerykańskiego

W niniejszej pracy staram się analizować role stereotypów dotyczących społeczeństw amerykańskiego i brytyjskiego na przykładzie wybranych dowcipów oraz zabawnych wypowiedzi zarówno Brytyjczyków o Brytyjczykach i Amerykanach, jak i Amerykanów o Brytyjczykach i Amerykanach. Moim celem jest zbadanie powszechnego pojmowania stereotypów i rozumienia ich znaczenia w żartach. Za źródła omawianych żartów posłużyły mi Internet oraz książki dotyczące humoru.Do analizy wybrałam dwie pary stereotypowych cech: poczucie narodowości i poczucie bycia najważniejszym narodem świata. Analizuję także dwie dodatkowe sfery, mianowicie humor i naturę stereotypów, ponieważ obie są poniekąd niedocenianymi, acz żywymi częściami kultury każdego kraju.W pracy tej staram się ukazać, że powinniśmy pogłębiać naszą wiedzę o stereotypach. Stereotypy nie tylko bawią – zupełnie jak żarty – ale też przekazują pewne prawdy o konkretnych zjawiskach, które są pomocne w poznawaniu i rozumieniu świata.

In my BA thesis I try to analyse the role of stereotypes about the Americans and the British revealed in jokes made by the British about the British and the Americans and the other way round. My goal is to investigate the paths of people’s conventional way of thinking regarding stereotypes and understanding their meaning in jokes. Examples of the jokes in discussion have been derived from the Internet and books regarding humour.I have chosen two pairs of features to analyse: the sense of nationality and the sense of being the most important nation in the world. I also analyse two supplementary spheres that are humour and stereotypes because they both appear to be underestimated, but are alive parts of culture of every country.Throughout the BA thesis I try to show that we should widen our knowledge about stereotypes, for not only do they amuse – just like jokes do – but they also communicate some truths about specific phenomena which are helpful by understanding the world correctly.
