Burning Man: An Analysis of the Performative Dimension of Fire Arts using Concepts from the Ritual Theory

Burning Man to coroczny festiwal odbywający się na pustyni Black Rock w Nevadzie, a zarazem największa wystawa sztuki ognia na świecie. Celem pracy jest przegląd i analiza kluczowych performansów ognia dla zrekonstruowania ich ewolucji oraz określenia przypisywanych im funkcji i znaczeń, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem roli i symboliki ognia. Jako materiał empiryczny posłużyły treści internetowe, takie jak wpisy na forach, dane archiwalne i materiały wideo, a do ich analizy wykorzystano pojęcia Victora Turnera z zakresu teorii rytuałów oraz koncepcje wypracowane przez bezpośrednich badaczy Burning Mana.

Burning Man is an annual festival held in Nevada's Black Rock Desert and simultaneously the largest fire arts exhibition in the world. The aim of the thesis is to review and analyze key fire rituals in order to reconstruct their evolution, compare them and identify the function and meaning attributed to them, with particular emphasis on the role and symbolism of fire. Internet content, such as forum posts, archival data and video materials, were used as empirical material, while the concepts of Victor Turner in the field of ritual theory and the concepts of Burning Man researchers were used for their analysis.
