Prolegomena to typeface classification

Podejmowano wiele prób stworzenia klasyfikacji pism drukarskich, jednak żaden sposób katalogowania nie został przyjęty do tego stopnia, by funkcjonował bez zastrzeżeń na forum międzynarodowym. Przyczyniły się do tego nie tylko rozbieżności terminologiczne występujące na różnych obszarach geograficznych, ale również brak jednolitych i jasno sprecyzowanych kryteriów podziału. Tematem pracy jest problemowe zestawienie zagadnień pojawiających się w dyskusjach dotyczących typologii pism z uwzględnieniem następujących kryteriów: budowa znaku, rozwój historyczny, przeznaczenie i percepcja. Wywód uzupełniono uwagami o trudnościach z przekładem obcych terminów odnoszących się do konkretnych klas pism. Zamieszczono także porównanie trzech narodowych klasyfikacji (polskiej, niemieckiej i angielskiej). W zakończeniu podjęto refleksję, czy tworzenie nowych typologii ma sens.

There were many attempts to classify typefaces, however none of the systems has gained the international approval so far. The main reason to that is not only terminological chaos, but also a lack of clear and consistent application of the criteria. The aim of this paper is to discuss the problems associated with typeface classification, considering such issues as: the anatomy of the characters, historical development of typography, context of use and perception. The difficulties with the translation of some of the terms are mentioned thus the comparison of three national classifying systems (Polish, German and English) is attached. In conclusion the question of the usefulness of typeface classification is raised.
