The Creative Image of the Young Krystian Lupa in His 1973 Director’s Exegesis

Praca analizuje egzemplarz reżyserski Krystiana Lupy z 1973 roku, przygotowany na potrzeby rekrutacji na Wydział Reżyserii krakowskiej PWST. Dokument zostaje potraktowany nie tylko jako zapis koncepcji inscenizacyjnej, lecz także jako świadectwo konstruowania przez młodego artystę własnego wizerunku twórczego. Analiza obejmuje zarówno teoretyczną część egzemplarza, poświęconą przede wszystkim Czystej Formie, dramaturgii Witkacego i sposobom jego inscenizowania, jak i praktyczną propozycję wystawienia Nadobnisi i koczkodanów. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono sposobowi argumentowania Lupy, jego stosunkowi do autorytetów, językowi oraz próbom racjonalnego porządkowania materiału. Z pracy wyłania się obraz młodego reżysera jako twórcy silnie intelektualizującego proces teatralny, dążącego do samodzielności interpretacyjnej i traktującego analizę jako podstawę artystycznej autonomii. Jednocześnie jego projekt inscenizacyjny okazuje się intensywny, zmysłowy i wielośrodkowy, co pokazuje, że racjonalizm nie prowadzi u Lupy do teatru chłodnego, lecz służy projektowaniu silnego doświadczenia scenicznego.

This thesis analyses Krystian Lupa’s 1973 directing portfolio, prepared as part of his application to the Directing Department of the State Higher School of Theatre in Kraków. The document is treated not only as a record of a staging concept, but also as evidence of the young artist’s construction of his own creative persona. The analysis covers both the theoretical part of the portfolio, devoted mainly to Witkacy’s theory of Pure Form, his dramaturgy and different approaches to staging his plays, and Lupa’s practical concept for a production of Nadobnisie i koczkodany. Particular attention is paid to Lupa’s mode of argumentation, his attitude towards artistic authorities, his language and his attempts to organise theatrical material in a rational way. The thesis presents the young Lupa as a director who strongly intellectualises the theatrical process, seeks interpretative independence and uses analysis as a means of legitimising artistic autonomy. At the same time, his staging concept is intense, sensual and based on multiple theatrical means, showing that rationalism in Lupa’s thinking does not lead to a cold or detached theatre, but becomes a tool for designing a powerful stage experience.
