Problems of the education system of Republic of Korea and their portayal in the "Sky Castle"(2018) series

Celem pracy jest zwrócenie uwagi czytelnika na problemy obecne w systemie edukacyjnym Republiki Korei i przybliżenie stanowiska koreańskiego społeczeństwa wobec nauki, jako głównej możliwości osiągnięcia sukcesu w życiu. Ponadto wszystkie owe ważkie kwestie są poruszane w koreańskiej popkulturze, także i w dramach. Zaprezentowano sposób przedstawienia tematu w mediach poprzez analizę serialu „Sky Castle” w reżyserii Jo Hyuntaka.Praca podzielona została na trzy rozdziały. W pierwszym rozdziale opisane zostają wybrane aspekty edukacji w Korei od początku dystantii Joseon do roku 1945, między innymi wpływ konfucjanizmu na szkolnictwo, hierarchii społecznej i płci na dostęp do edukacji oraz zmiany w systemie oświaty podczas japońskiej okupacji na obszarze Półwyspu Koreańskiego w latach 1910-1945. Drugi rozdział skupia się na przedstawieniu problemów współczesnego systemu edukacyjnego Republiki Korei, wielokrotnie mających źródło w nierównościach ekonomiczno-społecznych oraz zwraca uwagę na kwestię edukacji prywatnej. W ostatnim rozdziale problemy systemu edukacji omówione zostaną na podstawie konkretnych scen z serialu „Sky Castle” w reżyserii Jo Hyuntaka.

The aim of this paper is to draw the reader's attention to the problems present in the educational system of the Republic of Korea and to give an idea of the Korean society's attitude towards learning as the main opportunity for success in life. Moreover, all these important issues are addressed in Korean pop culture, including dramas. A presentation of how the topic is presented in the media was made by analysing the TV series „Sky Castle”, directed by Jo Hyuntak.The paper is divided into three chapters. The first chapter describes selected aspects of education in Korea from the beginning of the Joseon period until 1945, including the influence of Confucianism on education, social hierarchy and gender on access to education, as well as changes in the educational system during the Japanese occupation of the Korean peninsula between 1910 and 1945. The second chapter focuses on presenting the problems of the contemporary educational system in the Republic of Korea, many of which stem from economic and social inequalities, and draws attention to the issue of private education. In the last chapter, the problems of the education system will be discussed based on specific scenes from the TV series „Sky Castle”, directed by Jo Hyuntak.
