Occult motifs in the Mikhail Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita

Niniejsza praca dotyczy analizy "Mistrza i Małgorzaty" w kontekście obecności motywów okultystycznych oraz próby zakwalifikowania powieści Bułhakowa jako dzieła okultystycznego. W rozdziale pierwszym omówiono terminy okultyzm, mistyka, ezoteryka i magia. Dodatkowo zaprezentowano relacje pomiędzy nimi oraz tło historyczne. Zostało uwzględnione to, jak okultyzm wpływał na kulturę Rosji od czasów Imperium Rosyjskiego do czasów istnienia Związku Socjalistycznych Republik Radzieckich. Przedstawiono definicję, historię i podział literatury okultystycznej. Przytoczono teorię Anny Chudzińskiej-Parkosadze, mówiącej, że istnieje możliwość zakwalifikowania powieści Bułhakowa do powieści okultystycznej. Następnie wyjaśniono, czym są motywy okultystyczne i wymieniono niektóre z nich. W rozdziale drugim poddano analizie postacie takie jak Woland, Behemot, Azazello, Abadonna, Korowiew, Hella, Małgorzata oraz Mistrz. Zostało również zbadane znaczenie rytuałów, imion, liczb, przepowiedni, przedmiotów oraz relacji pomiędzy bohaterami. Przyjrzano się możliwym odpowiednikom tych postaci z innych tekstów kultury.

This work concerns the analysis of "The Master and Margarita" in the context of the presence of occult motifs and an attempt to qualify Bulgakov's novel as an occult work. The first chapter discusses the terms occultism, mysticism, esotericism and magic. Additionally, the relationships between them and the historical background were presented. It covers how occultism influenced Russian culture from the times of the Russian Empire to the times of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The definition, history and division of occult literature are presented. The theory of Anna Chudzińska-Parkosadze was quoted, stating that it is possible to classify Bulgakov's novel as an occult novel. It then explains what occult motifs are and lists some of them. The second chapter analyzed characters such as Woland, Behemoth, Azazello, Abadonna, Korovyev, Hella, Margarita and the Master. The meaning of rituals, names, numbers, prophecies, objects and relationships between characters were also examined. Possible equivalents of these characters from other cultural texts were examined.
