Poezja Wisławy Szymborskiej w przekładzie. Analiza tłumaczeń autorstwa Stanisława Barańczaka i Clare Cavanagh

Niniejsza praca zawiera analizę wybranych przekładów na angielski wierszy Wisławy Szymborskiej. Wiersze w tłumaczeniu Stanisława Barańczaka i Clare Cavanagh skontrastowane są z oryginałami i porównane do tłumaczeń autorstwa Magnusa J. Krynskiego i Roberta A. Maguire’a.Pierwszy rozdział pracy poświęcony jest przybliżeniu postaci Wisławy Szymborskiej i przedstawieniu głównych cech jej stylu. Ukazane są motywy pojawiające się w jej wierszach i poruszana przez nią tematyka. Na przykładzie wybranych wierszy wyjaśnione zostają cechy charakterystyczne jej twórczości.W drugim rozdziale zarysowane zostają główne pojęcia teoretyczne z zakresu przekładoznawstwa. Szczególny nacisk jest położony na teorię tłumaczenia przedstawioną przez Barańczaka i jego rozumienie pojęcia ‘dominanty semantycznej’. Wprowadzone są również podstawowe zagadnienia językoznawstwa kognitywnego oraz studium przypadku jako narzędzia analizy przekładu. Przedstawione są również pojęcia domestykacji i forenizacji oraz ekwiwalencji.Następnie wprowadzone zostają krótkie noty biograficzne autorów tłumaczeń oraz ich uwagi na temat procesu tłumaczenia. Staram się pokazać co kierowało decyzjami Barańczaka i Cavanagh i na co tłumacze chcieli położyć szczególny nacisk.Trzeci rozdział to analiza poszczególnych wierszy. Zaakcentowane jest zwłaszcza użycie gier i dwuznaczności językowych, neologizmów oraz języka potocznego obecnych w twórczości Szymborskiej i sposób oddania ich w języku angielskim. Na podstawie porównania z tłumaczeniami Krynskiego i Maguire’a pokazana jest literackość stylu wyróżniająca tłumaczenia Barańczak i Cavanagh. Ukazane jest, jak dla poszczególnych cech stylu Szymborskiej tłumacze znaleźli odpowiedniki w języku angielskim i które z nich zostały uznane za kluczowe w procesie tłumaczenia. Wyjaśnione zostaje, jak próby te wpływają na odbiór całości i podjęta zostaje próba oceny, na ile takie podejście przybliża czytelnikom postać autorki.

This thesis contains analyses of selected English translations of the poems by Wisława Szymborska. The poems translated by Stanisław Barańczak and Clare Cavanagh are contrasted with the originals and compared to the translations by Magnus J. Krynski and Robert A. Maguire.The first chapter of the thesis presents the author and the main features of her style. The main motifs and themes appearing in her poetry are shown and explained on the basis of selected poems.The second chapter constitutes an outline of the main theoretical notions from the field of Translation Studies. Particular emphasis is placed on the theory of translation as formulated by Barańczak and his understanding of the term of ‘semantic dominant’. The basic concepts from the discipline of Cognitive Linguistics and the case study as a tool of translation analysis are introduced. Other terms, such as domestication, foreignization and equivalence are also presented.The next part includes short biographical notes of the authors of translations and their comments on the translation process. We learn which factors influenced the decisions of the translators and what they wanted to put special emphasis on.The third chapter consists of analyses of specific poems. The characteristic features of Barańczak and Cavanagh’s translations are pointed out and the attempt is made to place them within the scope of the theory of translation. Features present in Szymborska’s poetry, such as the use of word-play, ambiguities and neologisms are listed and the way they are reflected in English is presented. Basing on the comparison with the translations by Krynski and Maguire it is shown that Barańczak and Cavanagh’s translations are distinguished by their literary style. It is explained how this method influences the reading and familiarizes the readers of the translations with the author.
