Norwid i Carlyle : on the greatness of man in the "merchant and industrial" age

Artykuł zawiera analizę porównawczą poglądów Cypriana Norwida (1821-1883) i Thomasa Carlyle'a (1795-1881) na temat wielkości człowieka. Ustalenia, poczynione na podstawie lektury On Heroes, Hero-Worship and the Heroic in History szkockiego pisarza oraz wybranych utworów pisarza polskiego, dotyczą przede wszystkim miejsc wspólnych w ich refleksji antropologicznej. W obu przypadkach fenomen ludzkiej wielkości łączony jest z postawą heroizmu, historiotwórczą, kulturotwórczą, wspólnototwórczą rolą człowieka, z jego relacją do prawdy i do boskiej inspiracji. Wątkiem wspólnym dla pisarzy jest również krytyczny stosunek do dziewiętnastowiecznej nowoczesności (sceptycyzm, utylitaryzm, mechanicyzm, upadek autorytetów). Obaj w powrocie do poszanowania wielkiego człowieka upatrują szansy na moralne ocalenie świata.

The article is a comparative analysis of the views of Cyprian Norwid (1821-1883) and Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) on the greatness of man. The findings, based on the reading of On Heroes, Hero-Worship and the Heroic in History by the Scottish writer and selected works by the Polish writer, mainly concern common places in their anthropological reflection. In both cases, the phenomenon of human greatness is associated with the attitude of heroism, the history-making, culture-forming, community-building role of man, with his relationship to truth and divine inspiration. A critical attitude towards the nineteenth-century modernity (scepticism, utilitarism, mechanical philosophy, the fall of authorities) is also a common theme for the writers. Both see the return to respect for the great man as a chance to morally save the world.
