Estimation of the amount of petroleum substances present in soil in choosen locations in Cracow by means of gas chromatography

Celem niniejszej pracy było określenie zawartości substancji ropopochodnych, głownie z grupy BTEX (czyli benzenu, toluenu, etylobenzenu, p-ksylenu i o-ksylenu), w glebach Krakowa przy skrzyżowaniach na alejach Trzech Wieszczów oraz na Błoniach Krakowskich. W związku z tym, dokonano charakterystyki węglowodorów ropopochodnych oraz ich podziału i klasyfikacji ze względu na źródło zanieczyszczenia. Następnie przedstawiono podstawowe informacje dotyczące gleby i jej właściwości, a także scharakteryzowano rodzaje gruntów występujących w województwie małopolskim. Ponadto ukazano wpływ substancji ropopochodnych na człowieka, środowisko, glebę, roślinność oraz organizmy żywe, a także opisano metody oczyszczania gruntów oraz podstawy prawne dot. ropopochodnych. Badania przeprowadzono za pomocą metody chromatografii gazowej z użyciem dozownika headspace i spektrometru masowego. Uzyskane wyniki porównano z dopuszczalnymi stężeniami określonymi w Rozporządzeniu Ministra Środowiska. Pomimo, iż w Krakowie istnieje mocno rozwinięta komunikacja miejska, nie stwierdzono przekroczenia obowiązujących norm.

The aim of this study was to estimate the amount of petroleum substances from the BETEX group that is benzene, toluene, ethylobenzene, p-xylene and o-xylene) presented in ground by the crossroads on Aleje Trzech Wieszczów and Błonia Park in Cracow. This thesis begins with the characterization of petroleum hydrocarbons, the division and classification thereof on the basis of the source of the pollution. Then, the basic information concerning soil and its properties has been presented as well as the characterisation of the types of ground present in Lesser Poland Voivodeship. Furthermore, the influence of petroleum substances on humans, environment, soil, vegetation and living organisms is discussed. The methods of soil depurating and the legal basis concerning petroleum substances are also described in this thesis. The study was conducted by means of gas chromatography method using the headspace and mass spectrometer. The obtained results were compared with the permissible concentration specified in the regulations of the Ministry of Environment. Even though the public transport in Cracow is well developed, the binding standards have not been exceeded.
