Grypomachy : the struggle between griffins and Arimaspians in ancient sources

Celem rozdziału jest analiza motywu grypomachii oraz zbliżonych do niej wyobrażeń w źródłach starożytnych. W pierwszej części tekstu autorka przywołuje źródła literackie starożytnej Grecji i Rzymu, w których pojawia się motyw gryfów i Arimaspów, poczynając od niezachowanej Arimaspei, poprzez Prometeusza Skowanego Ajschylosa i Dzieje Herodota, aż po dzieła Pliniusza Starszego, Pauzaniasza i Solinusa. W drugiej części autorka analizuje motywy podobne do grypomachii (m.in geranomachię i opowieść o indyjskich mrówkach), pochodzące zarówno z literatury grecko-rzymskiej, jak i chińskiej, oraz przedstawia dotychczasowe interpretacje badaczy dotyczące gryfów i Arimaspów. W trzeciej części autorka skrótowo opisuje rozwój motywu grypomachii w sztuce. W zakończeniu autorka stara się udowodnić, że wielość motywów zbliżonych do grypomachii w tradycji antycznej świadczy o tym, że legenda o walce gryfów z Arimaspami nie pochodzi z jednego źródła, ale stanowi konglomerat co najmniej kilku motywów, pochodzących z różnych części świata.

The aim of this chapter is to analyse the theme of grypomachy and similar motifs in ancient sources. In the first part of the text the author refers to the literary sources of ancient Greece and Rome, in which the motif of griffins and Arimaspians appears, beginning with not survived Arimaspea, through Aeschylus’ Prometheus Bound and Herodotus’ The Histories, ending with works of Pliny the Elder, Pausanias and Solinus. In the second part the author analyzes motifs similar to grypomachy (including geranomachy and the story about ants of India) which can be found both in Graeco-Roman and Chinese sources, and presents current academical interpretations of griffins and Arimaspians. In the third part the author shortly describes the development of the grypomachy motif in art. In the end the author tries to prove that the multiplicity of motifs similar to grypomachy in the ancient tradition shows that the legend of the struggle between griffins and Arimaspians does not derive from one source, but it is in fact a combination of several motifs derived from different cultures.
