Through the camera eye. A biography and literary output of Truman Capote within perspective of film productions

W pracy badam, w jaki sposób kinematografia postrzega/kreuje osobę artysty, Trumana Capote, i jak- wykorzystując możliwości swojego medium- odnosi się do jego literackiego dorobku. W pierwszej części analizuję wybrane adaptacje filmowe utworów prozatorskich pisarza, znamiennych dla jego tendencji i zainteresowań twórczych, a jednocześnie różnorodnych tematycznie i stylistycznie. Analizy te przywodzą do wniosku, że realizatorom zabrakło dojrzałości w adaptowaniu literatury pisarza i twórczego podejścia- do niej i do specyfiki medium filmowego. Część druga skupia się na życiorysie Trumana Capote i powstałych o nim fabularnych filmach biograficznych. Badam w niej sposoby prezentowania pewnych aspektów osobowości pisarza, kładąc nacisk na punkty styczności reprezentacji i odbioru. Próbuję też uchwycić ogólny, kulturowy obraz osoby Trumana Capote, jaki się wyłania z połączenia różnych figur jego wizerunków.

My purpose is to see, how a person of an artist, Truman Capote, is being perceived/created in cinema, and how had his writings been treated by film art and the distinctive scopes of its vehicle. At a first part of the thesis, the subject of analysis are selected movie adaptations of Capote’s novels, characteristic to his tendencies and artistic interests, and- at once- diverse in theme and style. Studies bring to the conclusion, that producers were lacking of maturity in adapting Capote’s literature, and creativity- in interpreting it and in using capabilities characteristic to film as a medium. The second part is focused on a biography of Capote and on feature movies based on it. I study methods of showing some aspects of his individuality, specially in points of osculation between representation and reception. I also try to capture a general, cultural image of Truman Capote, that arises from a combination of variable figures of his profile.
