Tabu w literaturze dziecięcej: Analiza Bridge to Terabithia, The Great Gilly Hopkins Katherine Paterson oraz polskich tłumaczeń powieści

Katherine Paterson jest autorką książek dla dzieci, która podejmuje tematy trudne, często klasyfikowane jako tabu. Nie dziwi więc, że wielu uznało jej podejście za kontrowersyjne, a Bridge to Terabithia i The Great Gilly Hopkins zostały wycofane z licznych bibliotek szkolnych w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Niniejsza praca przedstawia analizę dwóch powieści Paterson i ich polskich tłumaczeń autorstwa Alicji Skarbińskiej, a szczególną uwagę poświęca kwestii tłumaczenia elementów tabu. Analiza opiera się na normach proponowanych przez Toury’ego oraz odwołuje się do obrazu dziecka i jego znaczenia w tworzeniu i tłumaczeniu literatury dla dzieci. Starałam się wykazać, że choć tłumaczka zachowała wszystkie wątki fabularne, to zdecydowała się na wprowadzenie takich zmian na poziomie norm tekstowo-językowych, które mogą wpływać na odbiór powieści.

Katherine Paterson is a writer of children’s books, who does not shy from taking up difficult subjects, often perceived as taboos. It comes as no surprise that many have found her attitude controversial, and both Bridge to Terabithia and The Great Gilly Hopkins are listed among the most frequently challenged or banned books in the United States. The present paper offers an analysis of the two novels and their Polish translations by Alicja Skarbińska with special attention paid to rendering taboos. The analysis is based on Toury’s norms in the translation of children’s literature, and refers to the child image and its importance for writing and translating for children. I attempted to show that although the translator faithfully rendered all plot threads, some alterations that she introduced at the level of textual-linguistic norms may influence the reader’s reception.
