Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest funkcjonowaniu programów typu late-night talk show w Amerykańskiej telewizji. Autorka opisuje ich genezę w przemyśle medialnym i rozwój w kolejnych dekadach ubiegłego wieku. Analizuje również wpływ poszczególnych prowadzących na tworzenie różnorodnych odmian programów późnowieczornych. W pracy główny akcent położony jest na programach komediowych, których głównym reprezentantem jest legendarny "The Tonight Show". Pierwszy rozdział to analiza teoretycznych pojęć związanych z talk show, jego głównymi cechami i odmianami. Druga część opisuje początki talk show w amerykańskiej telewizji i w jaki sposób wyodrębnił się typ late-night. W tym rozdziale zostało także nakreślone tło ogólnych przemian w produkcji i odbiorze telewizji, które miały wpływ na rozwijanie się gatunku na przestrzeni lat. W kolejnej części opisane zostały tzw. "wojny late-night", czyli starcia między poszczególnymi stacjami i prowadzącymi o widzów oraz stanowiska. Czwarty rozdział nakreśla współczesną sytuację na rynku amerykańskich programów komediowych typu late-night. The purpose of this study was to investigate the late-night talk shows that aired on American television. The author describes its genesis in the media industry and the subsequent development that followed during the 20th century. It also analyzes the impact that individual hosts had on the formation of variety of late-night programs. The study focuses mainly on comedic programs such as the legendary "The Tonight Show". The first chapter is an analysis of the theoretical concepts in relation to talk shows, their main features and different varieties. The second part describes the beginnings of talk shows and how the type of late-night emerged on American television. This chapter also outlines the background for general changes in the production and reception of television that have influenced the development of the genre over the years. The next part describes the so-called "late-night wars" that took place between individual networks and hosts. The fourth chapter outlines the contemporary situation on the market of American late-night comedy programs. The author also shows changes in television reception over the last four decades. The study describes postnetwork and its consequences for the media industry and viewers.. As a result of these changes, the author proves that the creators of late-night talk shows had to adapt to new requirements and reconstruct the genre. An example of this phenomenon is "Conan", which especially over the last year has made huge changes in the appearance of the franchise and the way it is run. These activities are directly related to the dynamically developing new media and the reception practices that differ from the past. Using the example of "Conan", the author shows how late-night programs can function in the American media market today. The fourth chapter also includes an index of the most important late-night talk show comedies in the United States these days. The last part describes the function of humor on television. The main point here is the analysis of late-night talk shows in terms of participation in serious public discourse. The author used examples such as interviews with prominent politicians over the decades. The study depicts how the environment of late-night talk shows copes with national tragedies. It describes the exact actions of the creators after September 11, 2001 - the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The author summarizes the phenomenon of late-night talk show programs in American culture and makes her own conclusions regarding the further development of this genre. One of them is still a small number of female hosts, which is also shown in the index from the fourth chapter.
