Poetic Scene Construal as Translation Problem on the Example of Wisława Szymborska’s Poems and Their Translations into German and English

Niniejsza praca magisterska omawia problem konceptualizacji w ujęciu kognitywnym. Praca skupia się na konstrukcji sceny w poezji oraz możliwościach jej oddania w tłumaczeniu. Analizowane są wybrane wiersze z poezji Wisławy Szymborskiej: „Niebo”; "Kot w pustym mieszkaniu"; "Nic dwa razy". Konstrukcja sceny w tekstach wyjściowych jest zestawiona i porównana z konstrukcją sceny w tłumaczeniach na język niemiecki autorstwa Karla Dedeciusa oraz na język angielski autorstwa Stanisława Barańczaka i Clare Cavanagh. Metodą badawczą jest analiza porównawcza. Głównym celem jest ustalenie, w jaki sposób konceptualizacja elementów tej samej sceny przebiega w różnych językach, jak proces tłumaczenia wpływa na kształt sceny w porównaniu do tekstu wyjściowego oraz czy osiągnięcie stylistyczno-semantycznej ekwiwalencji w tekście docelowym jest możliwe w przypadku tłumaczenia poezji.Praca podzielona jest na cztery rozdziały: w rozdziale pierwszym przedstawiona jest postać polskiej noblistki Wisławy Szymborskiej oraz omówione charakterystyczne cechy jej poezji; rozdział drugi omawia koncept konstrukcji sceny w ujęciu kognitywnym; w rozdziale trzecim określony zostaje problem badawczy oraz metodologia badań; rozdział czwarty zawiera kognitywną analizę trzech tekstów wyjściowych oraz ich tłumaczeń. Po części empirycznej następuje omówienie wyników badań w odniesieniu do pytań badawczych, po czym zostają wyciągnięte wnioski.

The subject of the present master’s thesis is the problem of scene construal in the cognitive approach. The main focus is on the poetic scene construal and the possibilities of its rendering in translation. The problem is analyzed based on selected poems from the poetry of Wisława Szymborska: “Niebo”; "Kot w pustym mieszkaniu"; "Nic dwa razy". The scene construal in the source text is compared with the scene construal in the text translations into German by Karl Dedecius and into English by Stanisław Barańczak and Clare Cavanagh. The research method is comparative analysis. The aim is to find out how scene elements are conceptualized in different languages, how the process of translation affects the scene being conceptualized and whether stylistic-semantic equivalence in the target text can be achieved in the case of poetry translation.The paper is divided into four chapters: the first chapter introduces the figure of the Polish Nobel Prize winner Wisława Szymborska and discusses the prominent features of her poetry; the second chapter discusses the poetic scene construal in the cognitive approach; the third chapter names the research subject and the procedures to be implemented; the fourth chapter contains the cognitive analysis of three source texts which are then compared with their translations. After the empirical chapter, the results are discussed with regard to the research questions and in the end, conclusions are drawn.

Die vorliegende Magisterarbeit befasst sich mit der Frage der Konzeptualisierung in der kognitiven Auffassung. Der Fokus liegt auf der Szenenkonstruktion in der Poesie und deren Wiedergabemöglichkeiten in der Übersetzung. Es werden ausgewählte Gedichte aus der Dichtung von Wisława Szymborska analysiert: „Niebo“; „Kot w pustym mieszkaniu“; „Nic dwa razy“. Die Szenenkonstruktion in den Ausgangstexten wird mit der Szenenkonstruktion in den Übersetzungen ins Deutsche von Karl Dedecius und ins Englische von Stanisław Barańczak und Clare Cavanagh verglichen. Die Methode der Untersuchung ist die vergleichende Analyse. Im Rahmen der Forschung strebt man nach der Antwort, wie Inhalte in verschiedenen Sprachen konzeptualisiert werden, wie sich der Prozess der Übersetzung auf die zu konzeptualisierende Szene auswirkt und ob die Erreichung der stilistisch-semantischen Äquivalenz im Falle der Dichtungsübersetzung möglich ist.Die Arbeit ist in vier Kapiteln geteilt: Im ersten Kapitel wird die Figur der polnischen Nobelpreisträgerin Wisława Szymborska vorgeführt und die kennzeichnenden Merkmale ihrer Dichtung genannt; Das zweite Kapitel beschreibt die Szenenkonstruktion im kognitiven Ansatz; Im dritten Kapitel wird der Forschungsgegenstand genannt und die Vorgehensweise bei der Untersuchung gezeichnet; Das vierte Kapitel enthält die kognitive Analyse dreier Ausgangstexte und derer Übersetzungen. Nach dem empirischen Teil werden die Untersuchungsergebnisse im Hinblick auf die Forschungsfragen analysiert und anschließend die Schlüsse gezogen.
