The Woman Who Was Poor, a novel written in 1897 by Leon Bloy is still a work unknown to the general public which remain in the shadow of his most important production, Despairing.However, The Woman Who Was Poor fascinates many readers and academics because of its difficulty of analysis but also because of the mystical and very singular journey to holiness of the heroine of the novel, Clotilde.The purpose of this study is to show and analyze the three mystical stages crossed by Clotilde through the prism of suffering. The question is as follows: By what means, stylistic as well as novelistic, the mystical evolution of Clotilde develops itself through the symbolism of suffering and through her journey towards the completion of a liberating trilogy leading to God?To answer to this question, the mystical trilogy is explored step by step following the chronology of the novel. Each part of this work deals with a key notion; successively the Fall, the Redemption and finally the Regeneration of Clotilde.This systemic analysis makes it possible to understand Leon Bloy's vision of both History and Religion. The mystical aspect of his views on Religion is particularly lightened. It also helps us to discern his vision of the suffering female and how he creates his image of the ideal woman.This analysis finally enables the possibility for a more comprehensive study of the Suffering theme in the entire body of Leon Bloy’s work in order to embrace his very specific doctrine of Christian Love.

La Femme pauvre écrit par Léon Bloy est aujourd'hui encore une oeuvre méconnue du grand public, dans l’ombre du Désespéré qui apparaît comme sa production la plus importante. Pourtant, ce roman fascine de nombreux lecteurs et universitaires en raison de sa difficulté d’analyse, du parcours mystique et pour le moins singulier de Clotilde, son héroïne, dans l’optique d'accéder à la sainteté.L’objectif de cette étude est de montrer et d’analyser les trois étapes mystiques traversées par Clotilde à travers le prisme de la souffrance. La problématique est la suivante : Par quels moyens, aussi bien stylistiques que romanesques, se développe l’évolution mystique de Clotilde au travers de la symbolique de la souffrance et du parcours vers la complétion d’une trilogie libératrice menant à Dieu?Afin de répondre à cette problématique, la trilogie mystique que l'héroïne expérimente est explorée étape par étape en suivant la chronologie du roman. Chaque partie de ce travail traite ainsi d’une notion clé ; successivement de la chute, de la rédemption et pour finir de la régénération de Clotilde.Cette analyse systémique permet de comprendre à la fois la vision de Léon Bloy sur l’Histoire, sur la religion et son aspect mystique mais aussi de connaître sa vision de la femme idéale et de la souffrance féminine. Elle ouvre également la voie à une possible analyse plus globale du thème de la souffrance dans l’ensemble de l’oeuvre de Léon Bloy afin d’embrasser la doctrine bien particulière de l’auteur sur l’Amour chrétien.
