The Valladolid debate as an example of Spanish perceptions and policy toward indigenous peoples

Niniejsza praca licencjacka omawia hiszpański sposób postrzegania rdzennej ludności Ameryki Łacińskiej i Karaibów w ujęciu polityki kolonialnej, na przykładzie debaty, która odbyła się w Valladolid w latach 1550-1551. W pracy ukazano zarówno przyczyny jak i cele zorganizowania dysputy. W poszczególnych częściach pracy opisano kontekst historyczny wydarzenia, skupiając się na wczesnym kontakcie Europejczyków z ludnością rdzenną oraz zaprezentowano postawę władców Imperium Hiszpańskiego wobec autochtonów. Dokonano również analizy tejże debaty z ukazaniem odmiennych poglądów jej uczestników. Podjęto także próbę ukazania skutków przeprowadzenia polemiki.

This bachelor's thesis discusses spanish perceptions of indigenous peoples in Latin America and the Caribbean in terms of colonial policy, using the Valladolid debate as an example. The thesis shows both the reasons and the objectives for organising the disputation. The different sections of the work describe the historical context of the event, focusing on the early contact between Europeans and indigenous peoples, and present the attitude of the rulers of the Spanish Empire towards the indigenous peoples. It also analyses the debate, showing the differing views of the participants. An attempt is also made to show the consequences of carrying out the polemic.
