Embodied conceptual knowledge

Celem pracy jest zreferowanie przebiegu dyskusji dotyczącej charakteru wiedzy pojęciowej, która toczy się na polu nauk kognitywnych. Głównym omawiany punktem jest pytanie o ucieleśnienie. W pierwszej kolejności zostaje zarysowane historyczne tło toczącego się sporu, a następnie poddane są analizie kluczowe postulaty. Pierwszym z nich jest zmysłowy charakter reprezentacji i związane z nim ograniczenia. W dalszej części przedstawiony zostaje model oparty o wielopoziomową architekturę, który stanowi odpowiedź na opisane problemy. Cała analiza zmierza do wyszczególnienia rdzenia, wokół którego zbudowany jest spór. Jej zwieńczenie stanowi pytanie o zasadność dalszego prowadzenia dyskusji w formie, w której rysuje się ona dzisiaj.

This work presents a critical assessment of the idea that concepts are embodied, in the sense that they require representations or processes closely connected to the body or bodily processes. First part of the work consists of a review of the ongoing dispute between proponents of the embodied approach and the classical conception of cognition against which they argue. From that background I extract a number of key postulates that any theory of embodied concepts would have to satisfy. First, it should articulate the sensory nature of conceptual representations. I critically assess benefits and limitations of such views. Second, the processes that make use of embodied concepts should have a multi-level architecture.  This is necessary in order to address the variety of theoretical difficulties in making sense of embodied representations. This leads me to the the core of disagreement that I present in the final section of the thesis. Ultimately, given the complexity of these postulates, the dispute between the classical conception and the embodied conception of cognition can still be fruitful, since no definitive statement of either has yet been made.
