The concept of freedom in the "Faust" by J. Goethe

Celem artykułu jest zapoznanie czytelnika z trudnościami, jakie nastręcza mnogość definicji wolności. Analizie poddano dążenie do wolności osobistej tytułowego bohatera Fausta J. W. Goethego, którego losy i wybory życiowe wzbudzają do dziś wiele kontrowersji. W badaniach podjęto próbę obalenia teorii Isaaha Berlina na temat zniewolenia jednostki wyłącznie w przypadku ingerencji osób trzecich oraz posłużono się postacią Fausta jako przykładem nieprawidłowego pojmowania wolności prowadzącego do dyktatury jednostki i despotyzmu. Cel badania stanowiło zinterpretowanie wizji wolności (z wyróżnieniem wolności jednostki pojmowanej przez głównego bohatera) przedstawionej w dziele Goethego, w czym posłużono się między innymi refleksjami B. Constanta, M. Króla i Q. Skinnera. W analizie końcowej rozpatrzono postępowanie głównego bohatera przez pryzmat dwóch najważniejszych dla niego postaci: Mefistofelesa, stającego się wraz z rozwinięciem akcji bezwiednym sługą Bożym oraz Małgorzaty, której śmierć okazuje się być punktem newralgicznym w życiu alchemika. Pojęcie wolności w tym ujęciu opierałoby się na empiryzmie zindywidualizowanym.

The aim of the article is to familiarize the reader with the difficulties that poses a multitude of definitions of freedom. The pursuit of personal freedom was analyzed on the example of the title character of J. W. Goethe’s Faust, whose fate and life choices arouse to this day a lot of controversy. The study attempted to overthrow the theory of Isaiah Berlin about the enslavement of the individual only in case of intervention of third parties and used Faust as an example of an incorrect understanding of freedom, that leads to dictatorship of an unit and despotism. Aim of the study consisted of interpreting the vision of freedom (with the special distinction for individual liberty conceived by the main character) presented in the work of Goethe, which was possible thanks to, among other things, reflections of B. Constant, M. Król and Q. Skinner. The final analysis examined the proceedings of the main character through the prism of the two most important for him figures: Mephistopheles, becoming along with the development of an action involuntary servant of God, and Margaret, whose death appears to be a crucial point in the life of an alchemist. The concept of freedom in this approach would be based on individualized empiricism.
