Characteristic of climatic and vegetation vertical zones in the Polish Carpathians and the Sudetes

W obszarach górskich wraz ze wzrostem wysokości nad poziomem morza obniża się średnia roczna temperatura powietrza. Wraz z jej spadkiem w profilu wysokościowym, przemianom ulega szata roślinna. Wydzielone zostały piętra klimatyczne, których granice wyznaczają izotermy średniej rocznej temperatury powietrza. Mocno powiązane i wpasowujące się w nie są piętra roślinne, różniące się tworzącymi je formacjami roślinnymi i ich składem gatunkowym. W Karpatach Polskich wydzielono 6 pięter klimatycznych i taką samą liczbę odpowiadających im pięter roślinnych. W Sudetach pięter klimatyczno-roślinnych wydzielono tylko 5, ponieważ jest to górotwór o mniejszej masywności i wysokości n.p.m. Oba te obszary górskie różnią się nie tylko ilością pięter, ale także wysokością ich granic i miąższością. Piętra roślinne obu górotworów mimo tego samego charakteru roślinności w nich występującej, wykazują pewne różnice w składzie gatunkowym oraz ilości i jakości zbiorowisk roślinnych.

In mountain areas, the annual mean of air temperature decreases with increasing altitude above sea level. Along with the increase in the height profile, the vegetation changes. Climatic vertical zones have been distinguished with boundaries determined by the average annual air temperature. Plant vertical zones, differing in plant formations and their species composition, are strongly connected and match to them. In the Polish Carpathians 6 vertical zones and the same number of corresponding plant zones have been distinguished. In the Sudetes, only 5 vegetation vertical zones have been delimited, because of its smaller massiveness and lower height above sea level. Both these mountain areas differ not only in the number of vertical zones, but also in their thickness and the height of their boundaries. The vegetation zones of both mountain chains, despite of the same nature of the occurring vegetation, show some differences in the species composition and also the quantity and quality of plant communities.
