Abstract in English

The subject of the paper is the Polish translation of the selected scenesfrom P. Turrini‘s drama Ich liebe dieses Land (2001) by a well-known translator Sława Lisiecka, published in the journal “Teatr” (2002). The language in these passages provides a real challenge for the Polish translator: in this part of the drama the Polish language is an important component of Turrini’s mostly German dialogues, caused by the fact that one of the protagonists of the play, set in the contemporary Berlin, is a Polish cleaning lady. Her specific Polish-German idiom performs mimetic, ludic, subversive and aesthetic functions in the play. The paper analyses the translation strategies applied by Sława Lisiecka and reflects on available translation alternatives.
