Morbid curiosity and its psychological correlates among the true crime podcasts listeners

W ostatnich latach zaobserwować można dynamiczny rozwój podcastów, a zwłaszcza podcastów z gatunku true crime. Programy te szybko zyskują popularność i zainteresowanie słuchaczy. Gatunek ten opowiada o prawdziwych historiach kryminalnych, opartych na rzeczywistych wydarzeniach, dochodzeniach policyjnych i procesach sądowych. Przemoc, niebezpieczeństwo i śmierć są powszechne kulturowo zarówno w codziennym życiu, jak i w mediach czy sztuce. Fascynacja tego typu treściami stanowi istotną część współczesnej kultury. Podcasty true crime, wykorzystując storytelling, angażują słuchaczy w historie nierzadko brutalnych przestępstw. Odbiorcy tego typu audycji odkrywają mroczne tajemnice umysłów niebezpiecznych ludzi i mogą poczuć się tak, jak gdyby sami rozwiązywali zagadki kryminalne. Psychologia stara się odkryć, co jest źródłem motywacji do zagłębiania się w te mroczne treści. Praca wykorzystuje konstrukt makabrycznej ciekawości w celu zbadania korelacji pomiędzy poziomem natężenia tej cechy a fascynacją i zaangażowaniem w podcasty z gatunku true crime. Ponadto w badaniu zmierzono cechy takie jak: wrażliwość na wstręt, poszukiwanie doznań i łagodny masochizm i zbadano różnice pomiędzy odbiorcami podcastów kryminalnych a osobami, które takich podcastów nie słuchają. Łącznie przebadano 1419 osób. Niniejsze badanie potwierdza, iż istnieje związek pomiędzy zaangażowaniem w podcasty kryminalne a poziomem makabrycznej ciekawości. Wykazano również, że istnieją różnice pomiędzy odbiorcami podcastów true crime a osobami niesłuchającymi w zakresie cechy makabrycznej ciekawości i wrażliwości na wstręt. Jednakże w dobie szybko rozwijającego się społeczeństwa informacyjnego potrzebne są dalsze eksploracje dotyczące zjawiska fascynacji true crime.

In the recent years, a rapid growth of podcasts can be observed, particularly in the true crime genre. These shows quickly gain popularity and the interest of its listeners. This genre concerns real crime cases, based on true events, police investigations and lawsuits. Violence, danger, and death are common both in everyday life as well as media or art. Fascination with such content makes for a significant part of modern culture. True crime podcasts, through storytelling, engage listeners in the stories of often brutal crimes. The consumers of such programmes uncover the dark secrets of dangerous people's minds and are able to feel as if they were the ones solving the mystery. Psychology is trying to discover the sources of motivation towards immersing oneself with these dark contents.Using the phenomenon of morbid curiosity, this paper examines the correlation between the presence and intensity of this trait in an individual and the fascination and engagement with true crime podcasts. Moreover, the study measured traits such as: disgust sensitivity, sensation seeking and benign masochism a well as investigated the differences between the recipients of crime podcasts and people who do not engage with these. Altogether, a total of 1419 people have been examined. This study confirms that a connection between listening to crime podcasts and the level of morbid curiosity exists. It has also been demonstrated that there are differences between the listeners of true crime podcasts and people who don't engage with these in the morbid curiosity and disgust sensitivity range. Nonetheless, in today's quickly developing information society, further explorations of the true crime fascination phenomenon are needed.
