Innovation processes and outcomes: a comparative study of product innovation development in Apple and Google
Procesy i efekty innowacji: studium porównawcze rozwoju innowacji produktowych w Apple i Google
Proces innowacyjny – modele innowacji – innowacje produktowe – Google Glass – iPhone
Innovation process – innovation models – product innovation – Google Glass - iPhone
This thesis aims to present the essence of innovation and innovation processes, as well as to compare and evaluate product innovation development in Apple (iPhone) and Google (Google Glass). The methods included a literature review and comparative case study, based on secondary data analysis. Results indicate that the iPhone's success was the combination of incremental and radical innovation with a market-oriented development process that was well-structured with a strong integration of the ecosystem, and very clear communication of the value to the consumers. On the other hand, Google Glass was a disruptive innovation with the elements of experiment, new product, where the technology-driven approach was used that, however, resulted in problems of market acceptance, lack of a clearly defined user value, and also social and privacy concerns. The analysis implies that innovation processes leading to successful products are the ones that best understand and satisfy user needs, have an optimal timing for market entry, and are well integrated into a larger product ecosystem. While the failures stem from weak market validation, lack of social impact consideration, and early commercialization. Based on these results, the paper proposes that companies develop a mixed innovation approach that allows for technological progress at the same time as the user-centered design and iterative market testing. From a policy perspective, it highlights the importance of regulatory awareness and public acceptance in shaping the outcomes of emerging technologies. These results contribute to a better understanding of the factors influencing successful and unsuccessful innovation processes and provide guidance for future innovation management and analysis. The results also point at the advantages and disadvantages of innovation processes.
