American People’s Party and Russian Narodnichestvo – Comparative Analysis of Populist Ideologies of the 19th Century

Praca skupia się na zagadnieniu populizmu i jego najwcześniejszych przykładach w postaci amerykańskiej People's Party oraz rosyjskiego narodnictwa. Przedstawione są najważniejsze teorie populizmu autorstwa polskich i zagranicznych uczonych. W rozdziałach poświęconych amerykańskim i rosyjskim populistom opisana jest historia tych ruchów, powody ich powstania, podstawy ideologiczne i wpływ, jaki wywarły na historię polityczną swych krajów. Praca stara się odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy oba środowiska mogą być nazwane populistycznymi, wykazać podobieństwa i różnice, a także wskazać ich przyczyny.

Thesis concentrates on the issue of populism and its earliest examples - the American People's Party and Russian Narodnik's. There are presented the most prominent theories of populism of both Polish and international researchers. Chapters on American and Russian populism are a description of the history of those movements, the genesis of their establishment, the ideological ground, and the influence they have made on the political history of their countries. Thesis tries to answer the question if both movements may be called populist, show the similarities and differences between them, as well pinpoint the cause of said similarities and differences.
