Functioning of the Catholic Church in Poland during the coronavirus pandemic

Od momentu odnotowania pierwszych przypadków zachorowań na Covid-19 w Polsce rozpoczęło się stopniowe ograniczanie dotychczasowych zasad funkcjonowania większości dziedzin życia społecznego. Pierwsze restrykcje skierowane były do obszarów, w których gromadzą się ludzie: szkoły, kawiarnie, restauracje. Zakazem tym objęto także miejsca kultu, dlatego Kościoły i związki wyznaniowe straciły możliwość pełnienia swojej misji w dotychczasowy sposób. Celem tego artykułu jest przedstawienie sytuacji Kościoła katolickiego w czasie pandemii koronawirusa. W artykule zaprezentowano oficjalną odpowiedź Kościoła katolickiego w Polsce na pandemię, opierając się na dokumentach wydanych przez Konferencję Episkopatu Polski. Ukazano ponadto recepcję tych dokumentów przez duchownych i wiernych w mediach katolickich działających w Polsce.

Since the first cases of coronavirus in Poland have been recorded, the gradual limitation of the current rules of functioning of various areas of social life has begun. The first restrictions were directed to the areas where people gather: schools, cafes, restaurants. This prohibition also covers places of culture, which is why Churches and religious associations have lost their opportunity of carrying out their mission in the same way as before. The purpose of this article is to present the situation of the Catholic Church during the coronavirus pandemic. The article presents the official response of the Catholic Church in Poland to the pandemic based on documents issued by the Polish Bishop’s Conference. The reception of these documents by clergymen and faithful in Catholic media operating in Poland was also shown.
