Momenty epifanii jako technika literacka w opowiadaniach modernistycznych J. Joyce'a, V. Woolf i K. Mansfield

Niniejsza praca jest próbą omówienia pojęcia epifanii na podstawie analizy dziewięciu utworów autorstwa Jamesa Joyce’a, Virginii Woolf i Katherine Mansfield oraz próbą wykazania, iż zjawisko to zyskało na znaczeniu w epoce modernizmu i stanowiło technikę literacką stosowaną zwłaszcza w krótkich formach literackich takich jak opowiadanie.Celem pierwszego rozdziału jest przedstawienie genezy epifanii. Po definicji etymologicznej określenia następuje wyjaśnienie jego zastosowania w kontekście religijnym. Analizie poddane zostają analogiczne pojęcia spotykane w filozofii i psychologii. Omówienie podobnego stylu w utworach poprzednich epok kończy tę część pracy.Drugi rozdział koncentruje się na wyjaśnieniu pojęcia epifanii, począwszy od pierwotnej definicji podanej przez Joyce'a, poprzez odmiany zjawiska w postaci „chwil istnienia” obecnych w twórczości Woolf oraz „przebłysków” stosowanych przez Mansfield.W rozdziale trzecim zanalizowane są cztery podstawowe cechy epifanii. Po pierwsze, przeżycie to charakteryzuje się nagłością i krótkotrwałością. Ponadto, dochodzi do niego na skutek trywialnego zdarzenia. Wywołuje ono dodatkowo intensywne emocje w bohaterach, odkrywając przed nimi prawdę lub dostarczając nowej wiedzy.Czwarty rozdział podkreśla te aspekty epifanii, które pozwalają zaklasyfikować ją jako technikę literacką. Jest to przede wszystkim fakt, że język nie jest w stanie oddać istoty tego przeżycia. Aby ukazać czytelnikowi epifanię, unikając bezpośredniego opisywania, pisarze stosowali symbole.Ostatni rozdział analizuje opowiadania pod względem wpływu epifanii na postacie literackie. Doświadczenie to może przynieść rozczarowanie, przyczynić się do rozwoju osobistego oraz rozbudzić duszę i ciało bohaterów.Niniejsza praca ma na celu wykazanie, iż w każdym z dziewięciu opowiadań można zidentyfikować wszystkie omówione właściwości epifanii.

This thesis attempts to explore the concept of epiphany on the basis of the analyses of nine short stories by James Joyce, Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield, and to prove that this phenomenon gained significance in Modernism, and served as a literary technique, especially in the genre of the short story. The aim of the first chapter is to present the origins of epiphany. The etymological definition of the term is followed by the explanation of its usage in the religious context. The chapter proceeds to explore ideas similar to that of epiphany appearing in philosophy and psychology. Finally, the epiphanic mode in literature prior to Modernism is discussed.The second chapter focuses on explaining the notion of epiphany. It was Joyce who adopted this term to literature and in this way gave rise to the whole concept. Woolf coined another phrase to express similar ideas, namely moments of being. Mansfield, on the other hand, frequently referred in her writing to glimpses.The four basic features of epiphany are analysed in the third chapter. First of all, the experience can be characterised by its suddenness and momentariness. Moreover, it happens as a result of a trivial incident, and triggers intense emotions in the characters. Additionally, it provides them with a significant revelation. The fourth chapter emphasises these aspects of epiphany that allow to classify it as a literary technique. It is argued here that language fails to render the nature of the experience. In order to show epiphany, rather than tell it directly, the writers employed symbols. The final chapter analyses the stories in terms of the impact that epiphany has on the protagonists, that is, their disillusionment, personal development and the awakening of the body and soul.The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that each short story includes all the features of epiphany discussed here.
