A manly woman triumphing over her enemies. Gender, religion, and politics in Wacław Potocki's „Judith” and other early modern narratives about Judith of Bethulia

Praca dotyczy przyczyn i sposobów przedstawiania bohaterki biblijnej Księgi Judyty w dziełach autorów wczesnonowożytnych, szczególnie w „Judycie” Wacława Potockiego. Pierwsza część pracy dotyczy żydowskich źródeł tej biblijnej postaci oraz średniowiecznej chrześcijańskiej tradycji jej odczytywania. Druga część stanowi interpretację poematu Potockiego na tle innych tekstów epoki (szczególnie „La Judit” Guillaume'a Salluste'a du Bartasa, będącej jej parafrazą „Judith” Rafała Leszczyńskiego oraz „Juditha de caeso Holoferno” Jacoba Bidermanna) z uwzględnieniem ówczesnej społeczno-politycznej sytuacji Europy i Polski (zwłaszcza tzw. kwestii kobiecej, reformacji, zagrożenia tureckiego i powstania Chmielnickiego). Autorka omawia problem moralnej i genderowej ambiwalencji Judyty oraz opisuje strategie, które pozwalają na etyczną akceptację, a nawet uznanie konieczności, morderstwa Holofernesa w XVII wieku.

This thesis examines the reasons for and methods of presenting Judith, the biblical heroine, in the works of early modern authors, Wacław Potocki's "Judith" in particular. The first part of the thesis deals with the Jewish sources of this biblical character and with the medieval Christian readings. The second part is an interpretation of Potocki's narrative poetry in the context of other works of the era (especially: "La Judit" by Guillaume Salluste du Bartas, which was paraphrased by Rafał Leszczyński in his "Judith", and "Juditha de caeso Holoferno" by Jacob Bidermann), while taking into account the socio-political situation in Europe and Poland at the time (especially the "querelle des femmes", Reformation, the Turkish threat, and the Khmelnytsky Uprising). The author discusses the problem of Judith's moral and gender ambivalence and describes the strategies that allow for the ethical acceptance, recognition of necessity even, of Holofernes' murder in the 17th century.
