The primary objective of the thesis is to demonstrate the functions fulfilled by book illustrations and their impact on the text. It also investigates whether illustrations can be perceived as a challenge to the reader's imagination. It draws attention to an interesting theoretical perspective in which illustration is treated as a form of intersemiotic translation, in this case the change from a linguistic system to an iconic one.
