As the title of this paper indicates, its aim is to discuss English language usage in scientific publications with special reference to the current situation in such countries as Serbia, France, or Italy; however, paying particular attention to my native country that is Poland, i.e. a country which, according to Kachru’s (1992) distinction, is placed within the Expanding circle. On the basis of studies conducted by different scholars (e.g. hamel 2007, van Weijen 2012, Montgomery 2013) we know that the usage of English in international journals and scientific communication (mainly at conferences) is increasing. It has also been noted that the use of English is more common among scientists, natural scientists and engineers than among scholars of the humanities and social scientists. Both tendencies are observed in Poland. This is the reason why the matter is discussed within the academic world, e.g. in pAUza Akademicka, an electronic weekly of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. There are many arguments, both for and against, using English as a lingua franca of research and at the end of the paper we make certain recommendations for Polish academics.pl
