To destroy or to convince ? The rhetoric in prefaces and works of 19th century.

Niniejsza praca dotyczy ambiwalentnego charakteru retoryki we Francji XIX wieku. Jako że retoryka uważana jest z jednej strony za sztukę szlachetną i renomowaną, a z drugiej za narzędzie manipulacji, nie może zostać jednoznacznie zdefiniowana. By wykazać w jaki sposób funkcjonuje i jak jest przedstawiana w XIX wieku, podejmiemy się analizy następujących dzieł wraz z ich przedmowami : "Delphine" Madame de Staël, "Mademoiselle de Maupin" Théophile’a Gautier, "Angelo ou tyran de Padoue" Victora Hugo i "Poèmes Antiques" Leconte de Lisle’a. Pierwsza część zawiera ogólne spojrzenie na epokę oraz pisarzy i dziennikarzy XIX wieku. Kojelny rozdział to analiza samych przedmów według trzech filarów retoryki : ethos, logos i pathos, po której nastąpi część poświęcona samym dziełom oraz kontekstom w jakich pojawia się retoryka.

The thesis is dedicated to an ambivalent character of the rhetoric in France of 19th century. Being on hand noble and renowed and on the other, calculated and manipulatory it cannot be definitively classified. In order to show how does the rhetoric function and how is it presented, we are going to analyse the following prefaces and works : "Delphine" of Madame de Staël, "Mademoiselle de Maupin" of Théophile Gautier, "Angelo ou tyran de Padoue" of Victor Hugo and "Poèmes Antiques" of Leconte de Lisle. First part of the thesis presents the general image of 19th century with its writers and journalists. It is followed by an analyse of the prefaces accordingly to the three elements of rhetoric : ethos, logos and pathos. The last two chapters concern the works themselves and various contexts in which rhetoric appears.

La présente étude porte sur le caractère ambivalent de la rhétorique au XIXe siècle en France. D’un coté noble et renommée, de l'autre calculée et manipulatrice, elle ne peut pas être décisivement classée. En nous basant sur les préfaces et les œuvres suivantes: "Delphine" de Madame de Staël, "Mademoiselle de Maupin" de Théophile Gautier, "Angelo ou tyran de Padoue" de Victor Hugo et finalement, "Poèmes Antiques" de Leconte de Lisle, nous allons montrer comment fonctionne la rhétorique et de quelle dimension elle est dotée. La première partie de cet étude est une présentation du regard général sur l'époque et sur les écrivains et les journalistes du XIXe siècle. Ensuite, nous allons analyser les préfaces en fonction de trois piliers rhétoriques: l'ethos, le logos et le pathos pour enfin nous pencher sur les œuvres-mêmes afin d’analyser les contextes dans lesquels apparaît la rhétorique.
