What is Glee? Transformations of musical and teen drama genres in Glee series

Praca dotyczy pierwszej serii serialu Glee, prod. Fox. Wykorzystano w niej metodologię badania tekstów telewizyjnych zaproponowaną przez Jasona Mittella. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawione są najistotniejsze teorie dotyczące przemian ideologii dyskursu telewizyjnego i serialu oraz opisany został wpływ pojawienia się formy teledysku na syntagmatykę przekazu telewizyjnego. W drugim rozdziale przybliżona jest teoria intertekstualności oraz różne poziomy intertekstualności, na których Glee operuje, m.in poprzez komizm i kicz. W drugim rozdziale znajduje się również opis uwarunkowań producenckich serialu, który wpisany jest w politykę programową stacji FOX. Trzeci rozdział poświęcony jest historii filmu i serialu młodzieżowego oraz temu, w jaki sposób Glee nawiązuje do tych gatunków, a rozdział IV analogicznie prezentuje historię musicalu i wykorzystania jego cech charakterystycznych w Glee.

The dissertation is about the first series of the FOX-produced tv series Glee. The methodology used throughout the work is that proposed for analysing tv texts by Jason Mittell. First chapter presents and discusses the most useful theories of the transformations of the ideology of TV discourse and that of tv-series itself. Also, the influence that appearance of the audio-visual form of a video-clip had on the synthagmatics of the TV stream is analysed in Chapter I. The second chapter deals with the theories of intertextuality and with the various levels of intertextuality that Glee operates on, using, among other techniques, comism and kitch, and interwining versatile styles. Also, it explains the form of the series by incorporating it into programming policy of FOX TV station. Theory and history of teen movies and teen drama (Beverly Hills 90 210 extensively) is first presented and than discussed in the Third Charpter, as Glee uses elements of the genre's style. Analogicaly, Chapter IV presents the theory and history of musical (especially that sub-genre of Barbra Streisand's films), and than shows, how it is reflected and deformed in Glee.
