Terminological and cultural problems in own translation of the bird guide "Birds of Britain and Europe" by Rob Hume

Celem niniejszej pracy jest dokonanie przekładu fragmentów przewodnika ornitologicznego Birds of Britain and Europe autorstwa Roba Hume’a oraz omówienie najważniejszych problemów o charakterze terminologicznym i kulturowym, które pojawiły się w trakcie tłumaczenia, jak również specyfiki i optymalnej strategii przekładu tego gatunku.Praca została podzielona na cztery główne rozdziały omawiające kolejno tekst źródłowy na tle literatury popularnonaukowej, problemy terminologiczne, problemy kulturowe oraz adaptację tekstu do wymogów kultury docelowej. Po krótkim wstępie przedstawiającym ogólny zarys i cel pracy, w rozdziale pierwszym scharakteryzowana zostaje angielska i polska literatura popularnonaukowa przy szczególnym uwzględnieniu istniejących między nimi różnic, po której następują analiza tekstu źródłowego w kontekście publikowanej w Polsce literatury ornitologicznej wraz z uzasadnieniem wyboru tłumaczonych fragmentów oraz określenie skoposu i strategii tłumaczenia. Rozdział drugi, po krótkim wstępie teoretycznym opisującym założenia terminologii, skupia się na problemach terminologicznych związanych z nazewnictwem taksonów, anatomią, ekologią i etologią ptaków, a także tłumaczeniem określeń z pogranicza języka specjalistycznego. W rozdziale trzecim, oprócz roli ptaków w kulturze, mowa jest o konkretnych gatunkach ściślej powiązanych z kulturą źródłową (pardwa mszarna, rudzik) i docelową (bocian biały, gil) i sposobie, w jaki zostały one opisane w oryginale i przekładzie, a także o problemach kulturowych związanych z tłumaczeniem pojawiających się w przewodniku onomatopei i nazw barw. Rozdział czwarty, będący zarazem swoistym podsumowaniem, szerzej omawia pojęcie adaptacji oraz jej przykłady zaczerpnięte z tekstu docelowego, jak również próbuje pogodzić idee wiernego przekładu i adaptacji.Do pracy dołączone zostają stanowiące podstawę całej analizy skany wybranych do tłumaczenia stron teksu źródłowego wraz z ich polskim przekładem.

The aim of the present study is to translate excerpts from the field guide Birds of Britain and Europe by Rob Hume and discuss the most important terminological and cultural problems which emerged during the translation process, as well as the specificity and the optimal strategy for the translation of the genre.The work is divided into four main chapters covering the source text compared to the popular science literature, terminological problems, cultural problems, and the text adaptation to the requirements of the target culture, respectively. After a brief introduction presenting an overview and purpose of the work, the first chapter contains the description of English and Polish popular science literature with particular regard to their differences, followed by the analysis of the source text in the context of the ornithological literature published in Poland together with the reasons for selection of translated excerpts and, finally, the determination of skopos and translation strategy. The second chapter, after a brief introduction describing the theoretical foundation of terminology, focuses on the problems of terminology related to the naming of taxa, anatomy, ecology and ethology of birds, as well as the translation of the expressions situated on the border of scientific terminology. The third chapter, in addition to the role of birds in culture, refers to the certain species closely related to the source culture (Willow Grouse, Robin) and the target culture (White Stork, Bullfinch) and to the way in which they are described in the original and translation, as well as the cultural problems associated with the translation of the onomatopoeic expressions and the names of colours appearing in the guide. The fourth chapter, which serves as a kind of summary, discusses broadly the concept of adaptation and its examples from the target text, as well as seeks to combine the ideas of a faithful translation and adaptation.The work is accompanied by the analysed material: scans of the pages selected from the source text to translate along with their Polish translation.
